Newtown slumped to a disappointing mid-table defeat at Madeley in the Shropshire Premier League.

Despite John Anthony taking 5-23, Madeley’s 154 all out was still too much for Newtown who fell short on 135 with Tom Foulkes (33) and Jack Morris (27) offering some mid order resistance.

Welshpool leapfrogged Condover into fourth in Division One after inflicting a comfortable victory over the Shropshire side who were restricted to 126-9 from their 45 overs. Joe Monk 3-35 was the pick of the bowlers.

Welshpool eased to victory in the 31st over with Tom Anderson top scoring with an unbeaten 30.

Aaron Ruff-cock (55) and Rob Yewdall (50) gave Montgomery a fighting chance as they set 168 for Shelton to chase.

But it wasn’t enough as the border club secured victory in the 42nd over for the loss of six wickets.

Guilsfield’s match in Division Four fell victim to the weather.

There were wins for both Newtown and Montgomery in Reserve Division Two. Tom Corfield hit 86 as Monty set 186 for Albrighton to chase, but it was well out of their reach and Montgomery remain top of the division.

Newtown II restricted Lilleshall to just 113-6 from their allotted 40 overs. Openers Chris Bound (55) and Sam Morris (33) then did the damage as only their wickets were lost in the Newtown reply.

Welshpool’s Reserve Division Three match at Much Wenlock was cancelled.
