Angel's challenge fades with shock  - created on 17/02/2011

Shock of the weekend was the heavy defeat sustained by title challengers, Angel Welshpool as they fell to an 8-2 defeat at Newtown’s Elephant Wanderers.

The Crown were engaged on cup duty, so have fallen a game behind now, but with three to play, they need only one point to secure the title as their superior goal difference mean that even if the Angel win their remaining two league games, a point will suffice for the favourites.

At the Elephant, goals from Jamie Grainger (2), Craig Scott, Chris Bennett, Dave Jones, Cliffy Lawson, Sam Jones and Leon Williams saw the Wanderers totally dominate the match, whilst their Angel visitors, who are less accustomed to the heavy, muddy ground that the Sunday morning rain brought, could only score through Stuart Buckley Robins (2).

Elsewhere in the League there was a win for the Grapes at home to Forden Utd, with the Kingswood men despatched 8-1. It was a weekend of heavy scoring with most of the games seeing 8 and 9 goal scorelines. Scoring for 5th placed Grapes were Neil Lloyd-Jones (3), Lance Jarman (2), Richard Jones (2) and Chris Coverdale. Michael Davies had the reply for Forden.

Still propping up the rest of the League, the young Churchstoke side took another pummelling last Sunday, losing 8-0 at home to the Red Lion Caersws. There was a hat-trick each for Chris Morris and Emlyn Evans and Paul Jehu chipped in with a couple.

The Crown had cause to doubly celebrate as they heard of the Angel’s demise and won 9-1 at home to Abermule in the Roger Breeze Cup. Goals came from Jamie Bocking, Alex Bromley (3) and Neil Pryce (4), together with an own-goal. Phil Ryle collected the consolation strike for Abermule.

The big Llanidloes derby took place on a heavy High School pitch and was as close as was expected with the Oak running out 3-2 winners over Elephant Llanidloes. The Oak goals were scored by Nick Jones (2) and Chris Davies, whilst the Elephant scorer was Luke Jones with both.
