Welcome win for Pool

Welshpool's First XV moved up to 8th in Division 2 North with a 13-6 home win over Llangollen, in a game blighted by ill-discipline and poor weather.

After exchanging early penalties, Dan Earle kicked his second penalty to put Pool ahead at half-time. The visitors levelled before a spate of violent incidents left the continuance of the game in doubt.

Despite having several walking wounded, Welshpool refused to give in and were rewarded with a try for Tom Davies, which was converted by Earle for the win that sent Welshpool ahead of Llangollen, Newtown and Abergele in the table.

Elsewhere in the league, Shotton Steel secured a bonus point win in defeating Newtown 45-14, while COBRA kept themselves in the hunt for the top spots with a 32-3 win over Rhyl.

With the second round of the Swalec Bowl taking place next weekend, Welshpool will have to wait until October 14 for their next league match, when they travel to Rhyl, who sit directly above them in the table on points difference.

Welshpool 2nds 0, Porthmadog 41

Despite the torrential rain that fell for most of the game, both teams tried to play some rugby in this entertaining and occasionally fraught match.

Whilst the game was closer than the scoreline suggests, Porthmadog were able to take advantage of their better organisation and pacey backline to claim a comfortable win.

Porth were 20-0 up at the break, before tempers flared in the second period and it took several minutes for order to be restored, with a strict warning from the referee that any further problems would see the game end.

The try that Porthmadog had been in the process of scoring when everything went downhill stood, and the visitors were able to cross the line one more time to bring the score to 0-41 in their favour just before the final whistle.

Aberystwyth Under 15s 50, Welshpool Under 15s 0

Welshpool's Under 15s were left with plenty to work on after a challenging encounter with Aberystwyth at Llanidloes.

Joining forces with the hosts, Welshpool were unable to gain much headway against a strong Aberystwyth side, and will look to improve upon this result when they face them again in November.

Under 14s Festival @ Bala

Welshpool's Under 14s continued their unbeaten start to the season with three wins and one draw in Bala.

Ben Owen-Smith was the star of a 19-0 victory over Dolgellau, with the powerful prop/second row crossing for two tries. Arthur Powell matched this in the second game of the day, as the team came as close as they have ever come to beating Bala on their own turf, drawing 12-12, with the home side drawing level with the final play of the game after numerous penalties had been given their way.

In their third game, the team took on Bro Ffestiniog, and after a slow start, Welshpool took control of the game and claimed their first ever win over Bro.

In their final game, they met local rivals Newtown who began well and took a 5-0 lead, but Welshpool battled back to draw level with a try of their own. They took the lead with their second try of the game, but found themselves under pressure for the final minutes, with Newtown pressing hard at their line. The defence held firm, and a 10-5 victory was achieved.
