Welshpool undone by 25-minute blitz

Dolgellau scored 41 unanswered points in a 25-minute spell either side of half-time to claim victory at Maesydre, despite Welshpool leading for much of the first half.

In a back-and-forth first half, it was Welshpool who struck first, with Second Row Dan Stanley forcing a penalty from the Dolgellau full-back, which Daley Jones slotted over to give the home side a 3-0 lead.

Despite their pressure, Dolgellau found it difficult to break down the Welshpool defence, either in the loose or the tight, with the Welshpool front row battling hard to steal possession from the visitors, which they did at several scrums.

However, once the first try came, it seemed there would be no stopping Dolgellau, who ran in a second try before half time, giving them a 12-3 lead.

Then, in an excellent 20 minutes, Dolgellau ran in a further five tries, leaving their hosts shell-shocked. Despite the scoreline, Welshpool continued to battle, and were unlucky not to score points of their own in the last quarter of the game, and managed to keep their visitors from inflicting any further damage.

Welshpool: Ben Aldis, Barry Williams, Dan Hulse, Nick Larder, Dan Stanley, Pete Thomas, Fred White, Max Owen, Tom Carter (C), Daley Jones, Dan Lloyd, Andrew Thomas, John-Rhys Davies, Martin Gould, Chay Bowles

Replacements: Dave Roberts, Jonathan Rees-Jones, Wyn Jones

Penalty: Daley Jones

Meanwhile COBRA 2nds staged a dramatic comeback with a try from James Thomas winning the game in injury time.

A strong looking Newtown 2nds side surged into a 10-point lead, leaving COBRA with a mountain to climb. COBRA responded well and got a foothold in the game through a penalty through fly half Rhodri Davies. An unconverted Frazer Roberts try got COBRA back within a score, but despite creating opportunities, the game looked as though it was going the way of Town. However, on the last play speedy winger James Thomas broke clear to claim the winning score.
