Home sides dominate

Week Six of the Montgomeryshire Airgun League saw near domination of the sides shooting at home with Arddleen, Crew Green B, Newtown and Guilsfield A all on target.

Only Churchstoke managed to win on the road with a victory at Llanfair Caereinion.

Arddleen triumphed over Castle Caereinion despite a superb 35.5 from the ever-dependable Richard Morgan, surely the league’s finest opening “batsman”.

Crew Green B’s victory against Forden was never in doubt after a sterling start from Adam Hillditch (35.5).

Newtown held their nerve to record their second win in succession, beating Crew Green A by the narrow margin of 2.3 points (and recording their first score above 200 points).  Guilsfield A beat their B team by the comfortable margin of five points despite Jo Beamont’s excellent score of 35.1 for the B’s.

Churchstoke’s visit to Llanfair Caereinion proved worthwhile with a very exciting match – the bar was set high by opening shooters Jane Thomas and Showie Brown, who shot 35.5 and 35.4 respectively.

A highly respectable nine possibles were shot over the course of the five matches by the following shooters: Edward Kelton of Crew Green A (35.0), Jo Beaumont of Guilsfield B (35.1), Jane Thomas of Churchstoke, Marina Corbett of Newtown, Nigel Kelton of Crew Green A and Richard Lewis of Arddleen (35.4), Adam Hillditch of Crew Green B, Richard Morgan of Castle Caereinion and Showie Brown of Llanfair Caereinion (35.5).

As the season develops, the number of possibles shot on match evenings continues to increase – five during the first, seven on the second, eight on the fourth and nine this time around. As ever, the league continues to give a fine account of itself in this and many other regards.

The league table now stands with Churchstoke narrowly leading Arddleen with both teams still unbeaten. However, this will change on Thursday with the pair meeting in what could be a pivotal moment in the season – in which team’s favour will the scales tip?

Match of the Week - The tense battle between Newtown and Crew Green A takes the title this week; it is good to see Newtown achieving their first score of greater than 200 points in a match.

Shooter of the Week – Richard Morgan is the first shooter to reach three consecutive possibles, so he is this week’s shooter of the week.  

Charity Cup Preliminary rounds

Two preliminary matches for the League’s Charity Cup were shot. Castle Caereinion hosted Guilsfield A and Churchstoke visited Forden.  Unlike a normal league match this competition is shot on a “beat your opponent” basis, with the first team with three wins to their name being declared the victors.

Guilsfield A won the honours in their match, with Az Knight, K Cornell and Matt Knight recording wins over their opponents. The Cock Inn at Forden saw the home team succumbing to Churchstoke’s Owen Stimpson, Paul Gwilliam and Alan Baker’s three wins.
