Ducks broken, giants slain

Things are really heating up in the Montgomeryshire and District Airgun League following a dramatic night of latest action.

Guilsfield B celebrated their first win of the season against Forden, with Catherine Farmer leading the scoring with a season’s best 34.2.

Edward Kelton continued his run of good form, opening the Crew Green A batting at Castle Caereinion with his fourth possible of the season. His team took inspiration with Nigel Kelton also breaking the 35-point barrier. They ended with a five-point winning margin over their hosts.

Meanwhile, Crew Green B were unable to make their extra man pay with Jess Corbett’s Newtown side winning at the Admiral Rodney, 199.7-195.1. Tabitha Corbett shot her fourth possible of the season.

But the closest contest of the evening saw two of the league’s big guns - Guilsfield A and Churchstoke – go head to head. There was very little between the two sides; the two captains, Paul Phillips and Brian Davies, shot identical scores in their round. The lead changed hands repeatedly, and after the last shot of the match frantic calculations determined Churchstoke won by the skin of their teeth 200.3-199.9.

Perhaps the biggest shock of the evening came when a six-man Llanfair Caereinion stunned Arddleen by outshooting the former league champions. Nick Lloyd’s team shot their hearts out and achieved a score far above their season average, with Dai Tom Williams being the evening’s highest scorer with a superb 35.6. Despite possibles from Jack Francis and Richard Lewis, the home side couldn’t quite overhaul the visitors who won 199.3-198.1.

Seven shooters achieved scores of 35 points or above this week; Nigel Kelton (35.1), Owen Stimpson (35.2), Edward Kelton and Jack Francis (35.3), Richard Lewis (35.4), Tabitha Corbett (35.5) and Dai Tom Williams (35.6).

Match of the week: This was a toss-up between Arddleen v Llanfair Caereinion on one hand and Guilsfield A v Churchstoke on the other, but the honours go to Arddleen and Llanfair.

Shooter of the week: Dai Tom’s spectacular 35.6 scoops the award this week.
