Inspired by Jessica Ennis

Watching Jessica Ennis win gold at the Olympics was the inspiration behind a 12-year-old Welshpool girl becoming the best in Wales this week.

Maddie Griffiths (pictured), the daughter of Andy and Kelly Griffiths, finished first from 89 runners in the Year 7 race at the 56th Welsh Schools National Cross Country Championships, one of several impressive performances from the high school’s runners in Brecon.

“Mads has watched a lot of footage of Denis Lewis and loved watching her idol Jessica Ennis achieve the ultimate of winning gold at the Olympics,” said Kelly.

Maddie’s passion for sport was originally ignited at Buttington Trewern Primary School where she entered cross country events, and she has also been inspired by the success of her cousin Dillon Gill who has been recording impressive results of late too.

Maddie is also a member of Maldwyn Harriers with her mum adding: “Mads loves all sport, but her passion is running and she would love it to be part of her future.”

It was a decent day for the high school with other top 10 finishes too.

In the Year 7 Boys event, Callum Morgan finished sixth, while Carwyn Own finished seventh in the Middle Boys race.
