‘I could not be more pleased’

As the Commonwealth Games enters its final days of competition this weekend, the Wales Lawn Bowls Team Leader has spoken of her pride after her team picked up three medals to finish third on the table.

With Wales set to clinch a record haul on the Gold Coast, the bowls team has done its bit by winning a gold (men’s pairs), silver (Laura Daniels) and bronze medal (Mixed B2/B3 Pairs).

And as Hazel Wilson, who is also Ladies Team Manager, prepares to make the long journey home on Monday, she has reflected on a successful campaign and says the country can look forward with confidence to major upcoming tournaments.

“We have had a very successful games and as Team Leader and Ladies Team Manager I could not be more pleased to bring back three medals, which is brilliant,” said Hazel, from Berriew Bowling Club.

“It shows that Wales can compete against the best and on Southern Hemisphere Bowling Greens.

“We still have room for improvement and our preparation starts now for the Atlantic Championships in Wales 2019, World Bowls in Gold Coast 2020 and Commonwealth Games Birmingham 2022 to build on what we have achieved here.

“We also hope we have inspired people to play our sport.”

Our local involvement will continue in the Games on the last weekend with former Welshpool High School pupils Andrew Davies (Marathon) and Tom Williams (Rugby 7s) both in action.
