We’re not too good to go down

11/03/2011 @ 04:15

You would have thought Guilsfield manager Russell Cadwallader (left) would be in a relaxed mood heading into this weekend’s Huws Gray Alliance match at Porthmadog.

His side booked an end of season League Cup final date with a superb performance against Caersws in midweek and the recent upturn in results has seen them sneak up to fifth from bottom. Their style of play has been roundly praised too with their away form particularly impressive.

But the experienced boss has been involved with football for too long to put his feet up and has a warning for his jubilant troops that “no-one is ever too good to be relegated”.

His warning comes with nine league matches remaining but with the two teams above them seemingly out of reach for the time being, the club is still looking over its shoulder with up to four set to go down.

“It’s a great achievement to reach the Cup final after an excellent display, but we now have nine cup finals as league survival is of paramount importance and by no means safe yet,” he said: “I am getting tired of people saying we're too good to go down. Now is the time to prove it, we need to start turning draws into wins. The longer we're still involved in the relegation battle the more pressure will increase and a there’s lot of games to come against teams around us. But I have no doubt that there is enough quality in the squad to survive.”

Guilsfield will delve into the reserves for back-up this weekend with Joe Coulson, Graham McGill, Tom Coulson and assistant manager Chris Roberts all missing.

Caersws meanwhile face another tough day after suffering a run of five defeats in seven matches which has pulled them back into mid-table.

Manager Mike Evans accepted his side was well beaten in midweek but is looking for a reaction against Cefn Druids this weekend. But he’ll be without Neil Mitchell for several weeks after he had his appendix removed on Tuesday night and Graham Evans is struggling with a hamstring injury after coming off injured in midweek.

New signing Gareth Williams will be back in the side after being cup-tied and will face his former club following an impressive debut last Saturday.

Technogroup Welshpool are without a fixture.
