Tale of two strikers

17/03/2011 @ 11:47

Guilsfield and Technogroup Welshpool have both been involved in the transfer market this week as the race for Huws Gray Alliance survival hots up.

Guilsfield have lost the services of 17 year-old Adam Jenkins (right) who switched midweek to Ruthin, while The Lilywhites have bolstered their frontline with the return of Calvin Davies from Carmarthan Town in the Welsh Premier.

Jenkins had become frustrated by his lack of starting opportunities and despite being highly regarded by Guilsfield, he saw the opportunity of a switch to start afresh too tempting to turn down. The Guils have moved quickly by slapping seven days on Llansantffraid Village wide man Matt Jones, son of former Welshpool ace Steve.

Meanwhile, Welshpool manager Chris Herbert has called the capture of Davies a “real coup” and will throw him straight into the mix this weekend. It's the striker's fourth spell at Maesydre with his last stint producing 40 goals in 83 appearances.

“Calvin is a top striker,” he said: “He looks after the ball well and defenders don’t like playing against him. He scores goals for fun and his record speaks for itself. He averaged a goal every one-and-a-half games when he was last at the club.”

Technogroup Welshpool are still well adrift at the bottom while Guilsfield’s 5-0 reverse at Porthmadog last season shows they are not out of trouble yet.
