Cobra have surged to a four-point lead at the top of the North Wales Division Two following a hard-earned 32-22 victory at Llanidloes.
After a Will Worthington penalty gave Cobra the lead, centre Aled Humphreys crossed for the opening try, converted by Worthington to make it 10-0.
Following another Worthington penalty, scrum half Bryn Davies darted in for a try to give Cobra a comfortable 18-0 lead. Llanidloes reduced the arrears before half time with their own try from Richard Pryce but were down to 14 men when Ben Davies saw red for foul language towards the referee.
Captain Hywel Jones crashed over from close range to put Cobra 25-5 ahead with half an hour remaining, before the skipper and centre Iwan Vaughan went off injured and both hooker Steven Isaac and second row Lloyd Bright saw yellow, allowing Llanidloes to score two quick tries to make the score 25-17.
Cobra steadied the ship and secured the bonus point try when centre Aled Humphreys released flanker Daniel Jones. He showed a great turn of speed to gallop home from 60 metres. The conversion was again added by Worthington to make it 32-17.
After two more yellow cards for Llanidloes winger Richard Pryce and Cobra flanker Chris Morris, Llanidloes had the last say with a try to secure their own bonus point.
Welshpool’s recent upturn in form was rewarded with a bonus point 29-17 victory at bottom side Abergele.
Welshpool’s strong recent performances have gone unrewarded, but it was different story on Saturday as they ran in five tries to secure vital points.
