Lakeside Golf Club Vice Captain Doug Anderson finally got his rewards for a consistent winter season by completing a nett and gross Winter League double.
In the gross, Anderson was able to hold off the challenge of Past Captain and previous winner Gary McKay who finished second, pushing the big hitting Charlie Brown into third. Handicap Secretary Ian Clark took runner-up spot in the nett league, with Brown again nudged into third.
Meanwhile, the 2011 season got underway with the 3rd Anderson Challenge event. This 18-hole Stableford attracted a full entry of nearly 50 members with Gary Kruger (28) returning a scintillating 43 points to take the title. Fast improving Pete Philpott (28) returned 39 points for second, edging Paul Butterworth (21) into third.
Results for the gross event were: 1st Joe Davies; 2nd Doug Anderson; 3rd Gary McKay. Marius Van Lill took the Longest Drive with Seniors Captain Jim Knight capturing the nearest the pin prize.
As part of the forthcoming Golf Awareness week Lakeside will hold coaching sessions with local PGA professional Andy Humphreys. The scheme offers incentives for men, woman and juniors to consider membership at Lakeside, one of the county’s most progressive golfing venues.

Welshpool
Welshpool’s 2011 season teed off at the weekend with the annual Texas Scramble attracting a good turnout in cracking weather.
Marc Brown, Kevin Morris, Keith Morris and Martin Ward (54.1) took first, with Ian Evans, Stephen Pritchard, Mark Roberts, Andrew Watkin (55.9) second and Mike Kendall, Dave Rowlands, Dave Jones and Francis Jones (56) in third.
Sunday’s fourball betterball medal was won by Andrew Watkin and Steve Pritchard (60), edging out Richard Templeton and Steve Duke (61) and Jim Mason and Neil Davies (63).
Also Sunday, Welshpool and Newtown played a thrilling match in the Mail on Sunday competition with Welshpool winning on the extra hole sudden death through a Marc Brown birdie, after the two sides had levelled 2.5/2.5.
The Seniors Winter League finished with Dave Reid victorious on 59pts, Phil Jones second, and Graham Roberts in third.
