Hughes takes Cambrian Rally win

Welshpool rally ace Zak Hughes has stormed to an opening round win at the weekend’s Cambrian Rally based out of Llandudno.

Hughes, with Tom Wood reading his pace notes, (pictured) mastered the wet and muddy tracks to come through some of the most technical forests in the country with a win in his class at the BTRDA Rally Championship.

The victory gives the pair back-to-back wins at the event which is considered one of the toughest events of the year.

Hughes and Wood held a narrow two-second lead after the first two stages, but found themselves trailing going into lunch seven seconds behind Bobby Mitchell due to issues caused by the brakes set-up.

The issue was resolved at half-time service, allowing the team to attack the afternoon stages with full force and go into the final stage neck-and-neck with Mitchell. But a conservative drive meant the team escaped punctures which had seen an end to Mitchell’s bid.

“It’s fantastic to get the first round win and comfortably by 55 seconds,” said Hughes. “The stages have been very hard and it was a relief to get back to the finish in Llandudno with the car in one piece.

“I’m really looking forward to round two in Yorkshire, the forests up there suit my driving better so I hope to carry the momentum forward.

“I would just like to thank Powys Transport for supporting us this year, as well as long-term sponsors Philip Paul Car Centre”.
