Welshpool clinch thrilling win

06/03/2019 @ 10:38

Welshpool chalked up one of their more memorable wins in recent times by returning from Rhyl with a cracking 16-15 win in WRY Division Two (North).

It was a match that had everything, including a monster 65m penalty from Harry Davies, and played in difficult conditions against a Rhyl team that have been tough to beat since relocating to their new ground.

Davies’s penalty gave Welshpool an opening score, before captain Ryan Goodwin scored a sharp try under the posts, but the conversion was missed with the wind tipping the ball off the tee.

Davies did add another penalty to put Welshpool into a comfortable 11-0 lead, but the hosts hit back strongly with three unconverted tries to take the advantage at 15-11.

Not to be outdone though, Welshpool charged a kick down to allow Davies to score and nudge their noses in front, and the drama was complete with Rhyl missing two penalties in the last two minutes.

Cobra were forced to work hard to ensure they stay clear at the top by beating Colwyn Bay 17-15, but Newtown slipped off the pace after going down 28-12 to Cobra’s main title rivals Wrexham.
