Rugby Club revamp junior set-up
The club’s junior section will now be known as Welshpool Warriors and will run teams at the following age groups: U8 – Year 3; U9 – Year 4; U11 – Year 5 & 6; U12 – Year 7; U14 – Year 8 & 9; U15 – Year 10.
Chairman Dave Roberts explained the rationale behind the new set up.
“We were well aware that our junior section had been run with a shortage of volunteers and that our numbers had diminished over recent years,” he said.
“Our ambition is to offer the best junior sporting experience that we can and to that end we have undertaken a thorough review and made significant changes. We want our junior rugby to be a product that parents and players are keen to engage with.”
Junior organiser Mike Savage explained further: “We have recruited and trained more coaches and now have at least two coaches at each age group. The new brand will focus on fun, fitness and building confidence in our young people. Winning will not be our focus, it will be a by-product of young people enjoying training and playing at our club.”
Training for the U12,14 and 15 age groups will begin on Wednesday, August 14 at 6pm with a BBQ and fun games. Training will then continue every Wednesday from 6pm until 7pm.
Training for the U8, U9 and U11 age groups will begin on Saturday, September 7, at 10am with BBQ and fun and games. Training will then continue every Saturday morning at 10am for U8 and U9, and 11:30am for U11.
