Premier League nail biter

The Newtown Premier League is heading towards a dramatic climax with three players sharing top spot and several more still in with a shout of making finals night, writes Steve Greenwood.

Ironically Mitch Butler, Mark Layton and Gareth Ashley, who share the lead, are all previous champions, and with three finals night places still up for grabs, there is a lot to play for.

Welshpool Super League player Garry Jones has hit a rich vein of form and currently lies in the fourth qualifying place after defeating Rob Shingler, 4-2, and forcing a draw with Dave Boyle.

Currently in fifth, Chris Hurds beat Neil Astley 4-1 while James Bradford remains in the final qualifying position in sixth despite two defeats to Garry Jones and Butler who achieved the highest checkout of the night of 148.

Paul Bordewey, Steve Price, Shingler and Adam Joseph are all just one point behind and keen to book their spots for the finals night which takes place on October 4 from 7pm at Newtown Football Club. Entry to watch is free.
