Club appeals after Alliance snub

10/05/2011 @ 02:37

Llanrhaeadr will appeal against a decision not to allow them to go up to the Huws Gray Alliance this summer should they clinch the Spar Division One title tomorrow (Wednesday).

The village side has worked wonders in putting themselves within a win of the title, but their promotion party preparations have been blighted by Alliance officials who say they do not meet the criteria to step up.

That decision is wrong, says the club, who will now take their fight to the Football Association of Wales (FAW).

“We were told that we failed due to not having covered accommodation for 110 but we can prove that we have it,” said Chairman Phil Roberts. “The stand has 52 seats and we have a picture of more than 60 people standing under the pavilion so we have more than enough and have already sent our appeal letter to the FAW.”

Llanrhaeadr face Aberystwyth University at 7pm tomorrow night knowing that a victory will see them pip long time leaders Berriew to the title.

It’s been an incredible season for the side which has based its campaign on a miserly defence combined with the ability to score vital goals when it mattered most.

However, as it stands, Technogroup Welshpool and Rhayader will come down to Division One with Berriew stepping up even if they finish second. Presteigne are relegated from Division One and will be replaced by Division Two champions Montgomery.

League secretary Phil Woosnam confirmed that no other side will be promoted as they did not meet the necessary criteria by April 30 as per the pyramid regulations.

New applicants Aberdyfi, Machynlleth and Knighton will join Division Two next season, taking that league to its full roster of 16 teams.

Meanwhile, details for the Spar League Cup semi finals are:

Friday 13th May (7.30pm) at Llanidloes
Berriew v Tywyn Bryncrug

Saturday 14th May (1pm) at Carno
Bow Street v Montgomery

Montgomeryshire Cup
Caersws cruised through to the last four of the Montgomeryshire Cup last night after beating Berriew 2-1 with first half goals from Andy Davies and Mark Griffiths.

Quarter final draw

Montgomery v Machynlleth (May 15)
Carno v Llansantffraid
Llangedwyn v Guilsfield/Llanrhaeadr
