Season over for many!

It won’t come as a great surprise but the decision has been made to cancel a majority of the football league action this season.

The ongoing pandemic prompted today’s announcement by the Football Association of Wales (FAW), but there is still hope that the top tiers will return to action in March should Wales drop to Alert Level 3.

That means Newtown, who have already played a number of matches in the top tier, and the second tier’s Guilsfield, Llanidloes and Llanrhaeadr will have to keep their players in shape.

March 5 is being touted as the JD Cymru Premier resumption, running through until May 31, while the other three could face a March 20-May 29 season in JD Cymru North. 

The JD Welsh Cup will consist of the 44 tiers one and two teams only with ties played from April 20 to  June 5. 

The Orchard Welsh Premier Women’s League is also earmarked for a March 5 start, while the Academy Leagues and Junior Leagues will only resume at Alert Level 3 if Welsh Government Regulations permit.

“The decisions by the relevant Boards have taken into account the current Welsh Government guidelines and measures in relation to Covid-19 with the health and safety of everyone involved being of the utmost importance,” the FAW said in a statement.

To compensate for the loss of action this year, the statement outlined that fees will not be expected for the 2021/22 season from clubs who have already paid this year, but not played.
