Cricket was back with a bang at the weekend with last ball drama, a centurion and a mixed bag of local results providing an entertaining opening weekend in the Henshalls Shropshire League.

Montgomery’s opener at Shifnal III went to the very last delivery of the day, with the visitors slipping to a three-wicket defeat in Division Two.

Earlier, Keelan Serjeant top scored with 33 as Monty were dismissed for a decent looking 176. But it wasn’t quite enough as Shifnal used the extra overs to secure victory at the death with three wickets still in the bank. Charlie Kinsey and Andrew Barker took two wickets apiece.

Welshpool also tasted defeat in Division Three despite posting a respectable 161 all out at Harpers, with Dan Chodecki (40) top scoring. But the hosts’ response was solid as they secured victory in the 32nd over with four wickets lost.

Guilsfield & Llandrinio got their Division Five campaign off to a winning start at Beacon II after chasing down 167.

Alan Williams (3-28) and Andy Pugh (2-4) ensured Guilsfield gave themselves a fighting chance, with Martin Owen (52no), David Williams (51) and Dan Brown (27no) combining to see the visitors home in the 37th over for the loss of three wickets.

Newtown II were dismissed for 146 in Division Five, chasing Wiley II’s 239-3.

But the performance of the day came from Llanidloes batsman Daniel Lewis who smashed an unbeaten 111 to help his side secure a 57-run win at Pontesbury II in Division Six.

Lewis hit three sixes and 14 boundaries as his side set a target of 206-8, proving too much for the hosts who were dismissed for 149. Adrian Foulkes (5-28) ad Andy Evans (4-13) did the damage.

Also in Division Six, skipper Thomas Corfield hit 75 as his Montgomery II set 211-8 for Harcourt to chase. Harry Wilkinson followed it up with the ball, taking 5-18 to secure a 72-run.
