Nightmare start for local clubs

The new football season got off the ground yesterday but it proved a nightmare start for Mid Wales clubs in the Nathaniel MG Cup.

It was always going to be a tough day for Guilsfield at Airbus and despite equalising in the final minute they went out in an exciting 6-5 penalty shoot-out.

Llanrhaeadr fell to a 4-1 defeat against Penrhyncoch where former Aberystwyth Town winger Geoff Kellaway and Josh Shaw gave the Roosters a two goal half time lead, before Liam Skelner bagged a debut goal for the Waterfallmen.

Ifan Burrel increased the lead, before Shaw scored late on to secure a comfortable victory.

And Llanidloes Town also bowed out as Sam Molyneux scored an 88th minute winner for Gresford at Victoria Avenue.

Ashley Owen handed the Daffs a seventh minute lead, but former Colwyn Bay man Joe Chaplin levelled the scores on the half hour mark.

Matt Worrall then gave Gresford the lead on the hour, before Drew Reynolds pulled his side back into the tie 13 minutes from time, before substitute Molyneux scored with almost his first touch to put Athletic into the next round.
