Competitive rugby returns to Welshpool this weekend, and what better way to begin than with a local derby against the old enemy, Newtown, writes Gary Williams.
It was a disappointing start for Welshpool last weekend as their long-awaited opening game at Llanidloes was postponed by the hosts.
But they will have to quickly put that disappointment behind them with the arrival of Newtown to Maesydre in the WRU Bowl Competition.
Newtown started their campaign with a convincing home win against Machynlleth so Pool, despite some excellent performances in pre-season friendlies, know that they will have to be at their best to take the much sought after win.
Pool coach, Dave Roberts, has been pleased with the attitude and performances pre-season by his team and is looking forward to the test against a Newtown side, buoyant after their convincing win last week.
“It's been a long time since the boys have played a competitive fixture and what a game in store to welcome us back. We're looking to play some exciting running rugby for the expected large crowd,” he said.
COBRA also start their season after missing out last weekend and entertain Bro Ffestiniog at Cae COBRA in the WRU Plate Competition.
Machynlleth v Llanidloes has unfortunately been postponed.
In the second team competition, Newtown 2nds travel to Bro Gwernant (formerly Llangollen) whilst the COBRA 2nds v Welshpool 2nds game has been postponed.
