Welshpool High School's Year 7 boys football team are Powys Champions following a superb cup run.
The team launched their campaign back in October with convincing wins against Newtown High School (Newtown campus in the first round and then John Beddoes campus in the second round) to book their place in the final.
The boys travelled to Llanfyllin for the final last Friday on a wet and windy day, but it didn’t stop a game played to the highest standards by both teams.
Welshpool started strongly, using their pace in the wide channels to create a number of chances early on.
The breakthrough came in the 15th minute when Henry Ryder pounced on a loose ball on the edge of the box to strike a driven shot past the goalkeeper.
A second followed from Josh Williams who finished off a well-worked move, but Llanfyllin pulled one back on a counter-attack to make it 2-1 at half time.
Llanfyllin started the stronger of the two sides after the break but couldn’t force an equaliser past a tight Welshpool defence.
Welshpool weathered the storm and regained possession, leading to two penalties. The first was well saved but several minutes later, Loghan Weaver stepped up and slotted home the second give Welshpool a two-goal cushion, which they held on to for a 3-1 win.
This result puts the young Welshpool side into the last-16 of the Welsh Cup where they will face St Cyres School, Penarth, at home.
