Dan also receives Games call-up!

There was more celebration for the area this morning as Swim Wales confirmed that Welshpool’s Dan Jones will be a part of their Team Wales participation at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games this summer.

Jones won four gold medals at the Welsh Championships in April and those performances have convinced selectors to pick him alongside the likes of Olympic gold medallists

Calum Jarvis and Matthew Richards in their 20-strong squad.

It is unclear which discipline he will go in, but he set a blistering new personal best of 49.02 seconds in the 100m freestyle at the nationals.

Jones joins the town’s Adele Nicoll in the squad after she was named to represent Wales in the shot put by Welsh Athletics this morning.

But it was not good news for marathon runner Andy Davies from Forden who missed out despite easily obtaining the Games qualification mark earlier this year.

He told us that the news was “gutting” but that he would be ready should someone pull out. He also thanked Welsh Athletics for their continued support and wished the team "good luck".
