COBRA made it through to the second round of the Swalec Bowl with a satisfying 34-8 win at Division Three North leaders Menai Bridge.
COBRA made the worst possible start and conceded a try in the opening minute after failing to deal with the kick off and conceding a free kick at the scrum.
Menai Bridge broke quickly and following a Dave Williams break, the ball was quickly recycled for second-row Frank Rushton to score.
COBRA outside half Alwyn Williams and Menai’s Iwan Jones exchanged penalties, which was followed by a period of intense pressure by COBRA leading to a try from Captain Andy Evans who crashed over under the posts. Williams added the extras.
A second try for COBRA came after surging runs by hooker Chris Davies and flanker Gareth Evans created space for Alwyn Williams to break clear for a try which he improved to make it 8-17 at halftime.
Williams sent over a long range penalty soon after the break and while Menai upped their game, it was COBRA who scored the points. A fine break, chip ahead, catch and offload by scrum-half Iwan Vaughan sent flanker, Richard Rees, in for a try, again converted by Williams.
In the final minute full back Geraint Williams set up a position on Menai’s line; the ball was moved left for no.8 Aled Davies to touchdown. Alwyn Williams kicked the extras to cap an excellent individual and team performance.
