Welshpool lose nine-goal thriller

31/10/2010 @ 11:24

Technogroup Welshpool and Guilsfield both endured a frustrating day in the Huws Gray Alliance as a dramatic injury time goal denied Mike Barton his first point as Town boss.

In a breathtaking finale, Lee McElmeel scored a 90th minute equaliser for Welshpool only to be denied seconds later by Marcus Orlik’s hat-trick goal to make it 5-4. Earlier, McElmeel, Andy Webb (penalty) and Dan Tolley had scored for Welshpool with Orlik’s efforts and two from Paul Roberts accounting for Porthmadog.

Russell Cadwallader felt his Guilsfield side lacked the cutting edge going forward as Caersws left with the spoils.

Graham Evans slotted the visitors ahead after a defensive mix-up in the 35th minute before player-assistant Hugh Clarke received his marching orders for a second yellow soon after the break. Guilsfield could not capitalise and a late Marc Griffiths strike ensured Cadwallader got off to a 2-0 losing start as the new boss.

In the Spar Mid Wales Division One, Berriew took advantage of Llanrhaeadr’s free weekend to close the gap to one point at the top with a crunching 6-2 win over reigning champions Penparcau.

Waterloo Rovers responded well to manager Dave Proctor’s call for consistency by recording a well-earned 3-2 win at Bow Street to move into mid-table, but Chris Roberts was unable to sign off from his time in charge of Dyffryn Banw after slipping up to a worrying 3-1 defeat at bottom club Presteigne. Llansantffraid Village slumped to a 3-1 defeat at Carno.

In Division Two, Four Crosses underlined their title credentials by holding leaders Kerry to a 1-1 draw to stretch their unbeaten run to five, while Montgomery were held to a 1-1 draw at Llandrindod Wells. Llanfyllin drew 1-1 at home but there were home defeats for Llanfair and bottom side Meifod.

In the JT Hughes Montgomeryshire League, goals from Robbie Spragg, Luke Francis, Vince Davies, Jon Pritchard and Latvian import Mauris Suleus gave Guilsfield Reserves their first points of the season with a 5-0 win at Churchstoke in Division One. Two goals from Leon Williams weren’t enough for Waterloo Rovers Reserves who went down 5-2 at Caersws Reserves on Friday night, while high flying Llanidloes Reserves were held 0-0 at Bettws.

In Division Two, a pair of goals from Josh Thomas helped Llansantffraid Reserves bring Welshpool Reserves’ charge at the top to a halt with a 3-2 win. Kevin Davies and Carl Danson scored to give Kerry Reserves a 2-0 win at Trefonen.

In the Llansantffraid Village Cup, Llanrhaeadr Reserves chalked up a 4-0 win over Dyffryn Banw Reserves with goals from Alwyn Williams (2), Mike Roberts and Dean Jones. In the Tanners Wines Town Cup, Scott Holley (2), John Jones and Nathan Jones were on the mark for Waterloo Colts who beat Llanfair Reserves 4-0.
