Berriew tightlipped over new boss

03/11/2010 @ 03:12

Berriew have continued to set the Mid Wales football tongues wagging after it emerged that no clear contender was in line to become their new boss.
The club missed out on Dyffryn Banw player-boss Chris Roberts, who opted to join Guilsfield as No 2 to their former manager Russell Cadwallader at the weekend, and a meeting is being held tomorrow night (Thursday) to identify a candidate.
And with two impressive wins under caretaker manager Neil Pryce taking them to within a point of Spar Division One leaders Llanrhaeadr, the rumour mill has been pumping out names with regularity this week.
“We have a meeting on Thursday night and until then there are no names at the moment,” said chairman, Delwyn Langford. “We are just trying to keep things going and the lads have been playing really well under Neil since Russell left, so we haven’t had to rush into an appointment.”
Fans at the Guilsfield v Caersws game on Saturday were talking of a rumoured swoop for Carno’s experienced boss John Davies, but Langford commented: “We haven’t put seven days notice on him.”
So who could be in the frame? Mywelshpool spoke to a number of local ‘pundits’ for their opinions and we have cooked up the following possibles along with betting odds that you definitely won’t find down at the bookmakers!
6/4 favourite – Neil Pryce
Two wins out of two for the popular caretaker manager who originally said he wasn’t interested but is believed to have warmed to the idea.
3/1 – John Davies
A name that has emerged from out of the blue this week. The former Caersws midfielder would take some persuading to leave Carno where he has become a part of the furniture.
10/1 – Graham Evans
The former Guilsfield boss started the management merry-go-round a month ago by quitting Technogroup Welshpool, but said it would not be the end of him in local management. Perhaps the Berriew job has come too soon though?
25/1 – Nick Popyk
The former Trefonen manager has made a big impact since taking over at Four Crosses and, at 28, is one of the area’s most promising bosses. Enjoying his time at Foxen Manor but admits to being ambitious and keen to rise through the ranks in Mid Wales football.
50/1 – Mike Pearce
Still heavily involved with the club and was manager prior to Cadwallader. Could possibly work as part of a management team with Pryce but unlikely to go it alone.
100/1 – Darren Ryan
Out of work since leaving Newtown and has attended local matches recently. Believed to be keen for a return to football sooner rather than later but probably looking at Huws Gray Alliance and above.
1,000/1 – Russell Cadwallader
The ink has only just dried on his new Guilsfield deal and despite an opening defeat on Saturday, only the foolhardy would gamble a pound on him making such a quick u-turn!
