Welshpool close in on new manager

Technogroup Welshpool are getting closer to naming the successor to departed manager Mike Barton.

The club tonight confirmed that they hoped to have a replacement at the helm in time for the trip to Ruthin on Saturday week.

General Manager Liam Pritchard confirmed that the club had more than one option to consider but would be making a decision prior to the Ruthin match.

"We have had interest from quality people with a wealth of coaching experience, keen to break into management who see this an ideal opportunity to cut their teeth. The last person who fitted that description was Huw Griffiths so if we get more of the same we will be happy."

Benji Evans, who was coach to former manager Graham Evans, has been acting in a caretaker capacity since Barton's departure last Saturday following a disagreement with club chairman Mike Dawkins.

"We've put seven days on a striker from Rhos Aelwyd - Khoz Jones," said Pritchard. "He's an Iranian lad with Welsh Youth caps. Hopefully he'll arrive next week.

"So far no players have left the club. Scott Bright is staying. There's been a bit of interest from Guislfield and Llanrhaeadr in John Harris. We're hopeful he'll stay but we can't force him."

Welshpool expect to be at full strength for the visit of Llangefni on Saturday with Scott Jones not starting his suspension until Monday.

And Pritchard announced that all the interest in the club during the past week had produced a surge in enquiries about replica shirts.
