Herbert: Why I became Town boss

18/11/2010 @ 11:09

Chris Herbert signed up to Mission Impossible this week and should be an ambassador for Adidas after declaring ‘impossible is nothing!’.
The former Connah’s Quay striker (right) brings a wealth of experience and contacts with him to Maesydre and took just hours to sign ‘Welsh football’s Jan Molby’ with up to three more debutants set to pull on the Lilywhites jersey against Ruthin this weekend.
The 32 year-old became the troubled club’s third manager of the season following the previous departures of Grahams Evans and Mike Barton, but the new boss is relishing the challenge ahead and has spoken to mywelshpool about why he has taken on one of the most challenging jobs in Welsh football.
“I decided to apply for the Welshpool job as I felt it was the perfect time for me to get in to management,” he said: “Although I admit the job in hand is a huge challenge to say the least, I feel that I have got the players ready to step in and push the club forward. I’ve looked at the league many times and checked every little thing from goals scored to goals against, and I firmly believe that if we can pick up 30 points out of the 57 available then we will stay up.
“Though it is a very tough ask, I have the belief in myself and the players I’ve got coming in to the club and players that are already at the club.
“My first signing was made yesterday in ex-Chester City, Christleton, Airbus and Connahs Quay midfielder Wes Kilgannon (left). I am made up with the signing of Wes, as he is the man that will hopefully make us tick in the middle of the park. He is in the Jan Molby mould; same sort of build and has a wide range of passing. He will be the one to look out for in the push for survival. I’ve also signed myself on as a player, and I’m hoping my experience in the Welsh Premier and Alliance will come in handy.
“I am waiting on three more players who I have put seven days notice to speak to them. I am very confident of getting these players in. I am also waiting for international clearance of two players for Saturday. I’m really hoping that these players will make watching Welshpool more attractive than it is at the moment for the local public. The more we get through the gate means the more money is generated and this means more money can then be made available for me to attract better players for the fans to watch.
“I’m hoping that the whole of Welshpool will get behind us and help myself, Benji (assistant) and the Board get Welshpool back to where we belong, and that is fighting for honours in the Welsh Premier League.”
Technogroup Welshpool currently prop up the table after suffering a 15-point deduction for playing illegal players earlier in the season.
