Angel, Crown maintain title challenge

The Angel and The Crown maintained their challenge for honours in Newtown Sunday League at the weekend.

The title race sees no change at the top of the table, both leaders getting emphatic victories, although the league leading Angel Welshpool were made to work for their 5-3 win as the Grapes pushed them hard at The Flash. Scoring for the Angel were Stuart Buckley-Robins (2), Luke Weaver (2), Gareth Turner and Aaron Hicks. For the Grapes, who were level at half time, the goals were attributed to Jamie Foulkes (2) and Stefan Rowlands.

At Montgomery, there was a re-arranged fixture, with Elephant Llanidloes travelling to the Crown and were beaten 8-0 for their troubles, but still retain their fourth position in the League. The Crown remain just a point behind the leaders with goals from Gareth Bromley (3), Neil Pryce, Gareth Rowlands and Andrew Lloyd.

New signing, Tom Lepworth had a dramatic impact for Forden Utd for their visit to Newtown to take on 3rd placed Elephant Wanderers, scoring a hat-trick on his debut. Unfortunately for him and his team, he was the only scorer as the Wanderers netted two more in their excellent 5-3 victory. Getting the Wanderers goals were Davy Jones (4) and Tommy Smith.

At Churchstoke, the Reserves side belied their lowly position by beating their Oak Llanidloes visitors, 4-3. A goal each for George Mellor, Daniel Hicks, Luke Bowen and Huw Roberts, whilst the Oak kept pace with strikes from Matt Davies, Matthew Savage and Chris Davies.

A second win of the season for Abermule as they beat the team just above them, Red Lion Caersws, 2-1. Paul Jehu struck for the visiting Red Lion but the winning goals came from Abermule’s Mike Galvin and Steve Dovey.
