Even pool hit by the weather!

08/12/2010 @ 09:32

The weather may have played its part in a reduced programme for the Andrew’s Fish Bar Welshpool & District Pool League fixtures, but chairman Dave Gannon was still able to warm his fingers to bring his weekly round-up.
PICTURE: Local players join Steve Davis at his exhibition night held in the Elephant & Castle, Newtown, last week.

A mixture of postponed and cancelled games gave the Angel A and the Pheasant Nomads the chance to pile the pressure on their rivals at the Top of the League! The Angel A jump to 2nd with a 7-3 win over Cobra after Ryan Jones 2/2 set them on the way to a 5-1 lead. A mini come back was halted by Cougan “Half back” Jones as he looks to retire now after finally getting on the stats (his words lol), and Baz Emberton 2/2 took the 10th frame to finish.
The Nomads also rise up to 3rd, as they overcame Cock Brockton 6-4 in the final frame! Steve Sherlock went in-off the black to Phil Hamer, but his side led at the break as Jase Stokes, Dean Arthur Alan Price all won to Steve Pulsford’s 4th frame reply.
Steve Sherlock made it a happier restart for the home side but Graham Hamer kept it game on at 4-3, before Dean Arthur 2/2 gave the Nomads match points after the 8th frame. Phil Hamer 2/2 showed Brockton’s fighting spirit (4-5), but it wasn’t to be as Jase Stokes 2/2 took the all important final frame & two big points.
Four Crosses A postponed their fixture at the Oak A on Tuesday (with 2 players away) and the Lion Westbury postponed against the Socialites on Wednesday due to the weather; with 3 other games being pp in Div 3 also due to the weather, I’ve added a reminder below of the rules to help all teams for future games.
The Cock A are 5th and just 4 points off the summit, thanks to a very healthy 8-2 win over the Oak B!
The Cock got off to a 4-0 flier with Gary Gindrat 7-balling Dan Brown in the 2nd match up; Lee Andrews finally got the Oak away at 4-1.
New Signing Kevin Jones (new Landlord I think?) 1/1 made it a good debut before Lee Andrew’s 2/2 replied again for the visitors, but the end wasn’t long in coming as Darren Bowen, Pete Sheppard and Paul Morris all 2/2 made it a very one sided contest. The Angel B found their groove late on to defeat Argae A from 4-2 down!
The visitors were looking towards some much needed points as Ross Holloway 2/2 opened both sessions and created the 4-2 lead. The Home side rallied, however, and rise to 7th, as John Gardener (Digger) and Marc Roberts both 2/2 gave Jimmy Evans the chance to make it 4 frames in a row, which he duly did in the 10th and final frame!
In Division Two, With Castle Boys having the bye and Talbot D postponing (Monday) to set up for the big snooker exhibition night in Newtown, the Punchbowl A state their title ambitions with a 7-3 win over Herbert Arms to go 3rd!
The match was evenly poised with Jim Knight taking the 5th frame for a slight 3-2 lead at the break. John Henderson and Gavin Gittins 2/2 made a push for victory but Julian Preston 2/2 kept them waiting a little bit longer. Jim Knight 2/2 ended it in the next however and John Morris (2/2) took the last for two very big points.
The Topdogs lose ground however, as the Argae B now rise to 6th after their slow start to the season.
The dogs were out of the traps quickly as Andy Squibb and Dan Stephens both won, but Argae over took them at the half with Rich B, Rich W and Rob Huxley all winning. Argae then pulled out of site with Rich B and Rich W both 2/2 helping to make it 7 unanswered frames before Dan Stephens 2/2 completed the match.
Many thanks to the Horse & Jockey who travelled to the Breidden despite some horrible road conditions, and they were rewarded with a fine 7-3 away win!
They made a brilliant 4-0 away start before A Hilditch and H Nudds (1/1) replied for the Breidden. Dave Powell 2/2 kept the Colts on track before M Leung 1/1 reduced it to 3-5, but Sam Pugh 2/2 wrapped it up with James Edge 1/1 adding the icing on the cake at 7-3.
Finally, Four Crosses B and Westwood earn a point each and become two of five teams on 8 points!
Crosses took a commanding 4-1 lead with only Rikki Lloyd on target for the Warriors in the opening session. The Warriors made a much better fist of it in the 2nd half though, as they took 3 frames in a row to square the game at 4-4 with Rikki going to 2/2.
Jordan Smedley gave the home side a 5-4 lead but the Westwood took the point their 2nd half performance deserved as Jono Penrose made it honours even in the 10th.
In Division Three, What a big win for the Flunkies over the Green Dragon Buttington, as the top six teams are now separated by only 4 points!
Tom Manuel felt “right at home” when winning the opener but Steve Gittins and Kelly Gittins plundered for the Vikings before Ryan Manuel and Dean Jones gave the Flunkies a 3-2 half time advantage in a see-saw first session. Tom Manuel 2/2 put the pressure on at the re-start, but Dave Roberts stepped up to make it 3-4 and all to play for. Ben Aldis edged the Talbot closer still but Steve Gittins 2/2 again replied for the home side to made sure it would be a tense final frame. Chris Price was up to the challenge however, and the Flunkies are just a point off the summit with a game in hand...
The Pinewood remain 2nd despite their game being postponed at the Callow Inn. Communications were made between the teams of a possible cancellation on Tuesday due to the weather, but a call back from the Pinewood was expected on Wednesday. I’d like to remind all teams to follow the postponing rules as best as possible to help keep everyone fully informed.
The Pheasant B sit 4th with a good 7-3 away win at Lowfield. The away side led 4-1 as only Olly Kiddle could halt their march in the first half, and John Harris reduced it to 4-2 at the re-start. Ted Pryce and Jamie Cater both 2/2 sealed the match before Mark Benson 1/1 was on target for Lowfield, but
Lawrence Evison 2/2 completed the match in style. The Talbot Slayers stay in the top fold with a good 7-3 home win over the Green Dragon Welshpool.
Paul Kelleher 2/2 was the pick for the Dragon but the Slayers had Daryl Haynes, Dan Wilson & Brian Bebb all 2/2 and Roger Chapman 1/1 on their way to victory.
Just to remind all teams again, should you have any disputes over the rules the team captains are asked to resolve any differences with courtesy and common sense (as per rule 8; disputes).
The Mermaid left it very late to cancel their game but many thanks to the Punchbowl B for their understanding (with Russell being away after his father’s funeral the team were understandably unsure of events) and the Welly Wasps also cancelled with the Lion Llansantffraid Wednesday morning with several Ladies unable to travel in due to the snow.
Once again can I remind all teams to make every effort to play their games within two weeks to prevent back logs forming, but with Christmas coming up please get in touch with Shaun or myself for an extension if you’re struggling to get them played.
