Alliance call-offs head for record

20/12/2010 @ 05:40

Fans of Technogroup Welshpool, Guilsfield and Caersws will be understandably frustrated after statistics revealed today show that the Huws Gray Alliance is close to setting a new record already for matches postponed in a season.
The weekend’s white-out took the total number of games that have fallen foul of the weather to 33 this season, just 10 short of last year's record breaking season which was considered a ‘freak’ by many.
It is already close to surpassing the numbers of matches called off the previous two seasons but league secretary Chas Rowland said that there should not be a problem catching up.
“Because the Huws Gray Alliance was due to finish on April 9, we have plenty of time to fit the fixtures in,” he said. “I can’t remember the weather being this bad before but we are fortunate because only three clubs are without floodlights so this leaves plenty of opportunities to rearrange fixtures for midweek. One thing is for sure; there will be a few midweek games!”
Rowland admits that February could be a tricky month to schedule with two Saturdays taken up with Welsh Cup and regional cup competitions.
The league secretary, like many associated with the game locally, will be hoping that by then the weather will be kinder on us all.
