As Spar Mid Wales League Clubs vote for Aberystwyth University to play two matches a weekend if necessary until they have ‘caught up’, its league secretary says change is in the air for Welsh football.
Phil Woosnam (right) believes the harsh winter, which shows no sign of easing, could well be the final nail in the coffin for winter football in the Welsh Premier as clubs have spent weeks of inactivity.
“I am all for it,” said Woosnam who is also a Football Association of Wales council member. “I would say only the die hards tend to watch football in sub-zero temperatures these days!”
Woosnam faces another white-out this weekend as only a handful of games have been played for four weeks and the weather forecast doesn’t offer much hope for the New Year weekend neither.
He says the improvement on club facilities with the introduction of lights to many clubs will ease any potential problems of a fixture backlog.
“There are no problems at the moment with most clubs well up with their fixtures,” he said. “As far as Division One is concerned, a number of clubs have lights so are able to catch up that way with Aber Uni being the only major concern. We don’t want clubs to be left with them only to play during May otherwise it may jeopardise some clubs’ aspirations.
“The league clubs have voted to get Aber Uni to ‘catch up’ with two games a weekend wherever possible.
“Division Two only have 24 games and most are over halfway there so no problems at the moment. There is no need to extend the season unless this continues into March!”
