£80m investment and dozens of jobs
Broad Energy (Wales) Ltd is proposing an energy recovery facility (ERF) at the site which could provide heat and electricity to around 8,000 local homes and businesses.
Powered by residual, non-recyclable waste the plant would secure the future of the former brickworks site and quarry for long term employment use and contribute to environmental targets in Wales.
Residents are being invited to visit an exhibition taking place on December 7 to learn more about the ERF and to have their say about the proposed development.
It would generate 9MW of electricity and provide heat and hot water to nearby businesses, displacing some power produced by fossil fuels.
“We need to look at better ways of dealing with our non-recyclable waste and the ERF would use 100,000 tonnes of processed, non-recyclable waste as its fuel, which would otherwise be sent to landfill,” the company said in a press statement.
“The development represents an investment of £80million in the area and would generate enough power to supply the needs of around 8,000 homes in the region.”
According to the project press release, the project would also offer a range of benefits to the local economy:
· Approximately 100-150 people will be employed on site during the two-year construction phase
· Long term commitment to the local community with up to 30 permanent skilled jobs during plant operation
· Additional contract opportunities during construction and operational phases
· A range of local businesses from sandwich shops and accommodation to more technical will enjoy opportunities to provide indirect services
The energy recovery facility would act as an anchor development for an eco-business park, a separate development being proposed at the site by the quarry owners. Renewable heat in the form of hot water could be supplied to tenants at the future eco-business park and the nearby Offa’s Dyke Business Park.
A full environmental impact assessment is being undertaken as part of the planning process.
A planning application will be submitted to Powys County Council in the coming months, once plans have been finalised having taken account of feedback from the local community and stakeholders.
Outline details of the proposals will be unveiled to local residents and businesses at the public exhibition to be held next Wednesday, December 7 in the Conference Suite of the Welshpool Livestock Sales, from 2pm-8pm.
