Christmas sale at WLS

Christmas is coming and Welshpool Livestock Sales reports on its Christmas Fatstock Show and Sale.

OTMS (35)

An entry of 35 Otm cattle this week, selling to a top of £1230 (150ppkg) for a 820kg Limousin cow from F W Humphreys & Sons, Brook House Farm, whom also receives the prize for highest price cull cow of the day kindly sponsored by Hafren Veterinary Group.   TI & M Jones, Braichbedw, presented a Limousin cow weighing 716kg making £959.44 (134ppkg) Heifers under 48 months topped at £1106.91 (147ppkg) for a 753kg Limousin from C D Gittins & Co, Lower Llivior. A 31 month old British Blue heifer from P L Harrison, Neuaddlwyd, weighed in at 618kg making £1087.68 (176ppkg).

Otm Cows (x27) averaged 102.64ppkg / £666.62.

Otm Bull (x1) averaged 105ppkg / £978.60.

Cows 48 to 72 months (x2) averaged 75ppkg / £492.24

Heifers under 48 months (x5) averaged 113.02ppkg / £661.63.

Overall average of 102.51ppkg.

FAT CATTLE (30)

The Fat cattle show was kindly sponsored by Briarwood Products ltd and For Farmers and was judged by Mr. P. Tomlinson, Llanfyllin. The Champion title was awarded to J M Rowlands, Dolwen Farm. The Limousin heifer, that was also 1st prize Heifer, weighed 537kg and made 302ppkg realising £1621.74  was bought by Rikki Lloyd Butchers, Welshpool. The 2nd prize Heifer title and reserve Champion went to BL Griffiths, Lower Penygelli, for a Limousin weighing 636kg. JM Rowlands was also awarded 1st prize pair of heifers weighing 511kg 260ppkg bought by Rikki Lloyd Butcher, Welshpool. CJ & ME Williams, Minysarn, presented 2nd prize pair of heifers weighing 416kg and 461kg making 222ppkg and 220ppkg respectively selling to G R Evans & Co, Wholesale Butchers, Corwen.

PRIME LAMBS (5668)

Out of the entry of prime lambs 220 were entered in the 4 show classes. Welshpool Livestock would like to thank the Agricultural Mortgage Company for sponsoring the prime lamb competitions. And a Thank you to the judge, Mr Rob Pritchard, for judging the section. Show results:

Standards (1293) to 218ppkg from C J Davies & Son, Waengwyn, Cefn Coch. Others to 209ppkg from NG & GG Davies, Trawsgelli. Average of 161.16pp/kg.

Mediums (2028) to 356ppkg & 270ppkg from DW & LE Morgan, Lower House. Others to 263ppkg from CJ & ME Williams, Minysarn. Average of 166.20pp/kg

Heavies (1390) to 274ppkg from M J Williams, Pontyperson. Others to 250ppkg from DW & LE Morgans, Lower House. Average of 158.89ppkg   

Over Weights (153) to 193ppkg from F & MJ Williams, Cefngwilgy Fach. Others to 175ppkg from H Hughes & Son, Hendy. Average of 151.25ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (2170)

A good show of cull ewes this week with averages at £47 for ewes and £63.47 for rams. Receiving the prize for the highest priced pen of 5 cull ewes or more, kindly sponsored by Morgans Of Newtown, was DTA Williams, Upper Bolbro, with 5 ewes making £102. Top price in the ewe section was G M Mills, Penisaf Manledd, with two ewes at £110. WG & TAG Davies, Brenan, presented a ram making £108.

STORE LAMBS

An entry of 1052 store lambs this week selling to a top of £68 for 12 mule theave lambs from R J Roberts, Dysefin Farm. 10 Suffolk theave lambs from EE Richards & EJ Daniels, Brynbach, made £67.50. Mixed and Clean lambs fro J R Evans, Brynderwen, made £67. Wether lambs topped at £66.50 from Gittins & Co, Giants Bank. Tup lambs topped at £65 from I Graham, Aithen farm.

Averages of the day were:

Theave Lambs (286) averaged £48.12

Mixed and Clean Lambs (341) averaged £48.02

Wether lambs (31) averaged £50.24

Tup Lambs (394) averaged £44.86

DAIRY COWS

There was an entry of 4 heifers at the annual show and sale in Welshpool, Kindly sponsored by Genus.

A Thank you goes to the judge Mr Nick Evans, Dolobran Hall.  The Alan Morris Perpetual Trophy for the best Dairy Heifer was won by Alan Morris, Maestanyglwyden. 2nd prize heifer was also won by Alan Morris, and 3rd prize was won by G W Watkin, Henllys.

Alan Morris’ 1st place heifer sired by ‘Gerard’ sold for £1680 to the judge Mr Evans. 2nd place heifer was Pedigree Holstein Friesian Heifer ‘Burnbrae Super Lydia’ sired by ‘Gerard’ made £1500 also selling to the judge Mr Evans. 3rd place heifer from G W Watkin was a Pedigree Holstein Friesian Heifer ‘Henllys Oak Primrose’ selling for £1720.

IN-CALF HEIFERS

The annual consignment from Brian, John & David Roberts, Stingwern, saw the 6th production sale of 43 in-calf heifers being a mixture of Pedigree Limousin, Limousin x and British Blue x. All heifers are in-calf to pedigree Limousin bulls: Woodhouse Custer, Glangwden Itunes, Bailea Vanquish and Stingwern John. With quality in-calf heifers on offer we saw a top of £2750 for a Pedigree Limousin in calf to Glangwden Itunes due Jan/Feb. Next at £2720 was a Limousin x British Blue in-calf to ‘Woodhouse Custer’. Another Limousin x British Blue also in-calf to ‘Woodhouse Custer’ made £2700. Overall trade was excellent with great demand on all outfits from a ring full of people, which returned an average of £2402.

A breakdown of all prices achieved were as follows: £2600 + 11 lots, £2400 - £2600 14 lots, £2200 -   £2400 11 lots, £2000 - £2200 4 lots, <£2000 3 lots.

IN-LAMB BELTEX

Welshpool Livestock Sales are delighted to report a highly successful sale of just 20 pedigree in-lamb Beltex ewes on behalf of the Welsh Beltex Club. Awarded the Championship was Aged ewe from Mr Rhys Francis, Pistyll Uchaf, ‘Crew’ flock with imported ewe ‘Van’t Hoveke’ which sold for 720gns being rehomed locally in Llanwddyn. Reserve Champion was ‘Smart Ass Ava’ from Mr D E Owen, Golygfa’r Dyffryn, ‘Smart Ass’ flock, which went on to sell for 65gns to H J Williams, Maesgadfa, Bala.

Topping the sale was ‘Smart Ass Adorable Ann’ from Mr D E Evans. Ewe lambs topped at 580gns from Mr D E Owen with ‘Smart Ass Bella’ selling to E Edwards, Parc Newydd, Llanfechell.

Averages of the day were as follows: Aged Ewes 584gns, Yearling Ewes 613gns, Ewe Lambs 451gns, Overall Average 549gns.
