Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a sale at Buttington Cross on Monday.

OTMS (24)

A slightly smaller entry of Otm cattle this week. Topping the otm section was a 851kg Charolais cow from D & MC Hughes, Lower Gwernycil, making £1080.77(127ppkg). WRB Jones, Brynawelon, presented a Limousin weighing in at 646kg making £956.08 (148ppkg). Cows 48 to 72 months topped at £1189.23 (147ppkg) from JRS Hughes & Co, Lower Munllyn, for a 809kg Limousin.

Otm Cows (x9) averaged 123.36ppkg / £812.54.

Otm Bull (x2) averaged 112ppkg / £995.12.

Cows 48 to 72 months (x9) averaged 121.72ppkg / £742.62.

Steers under 48 months (x2) averaged 136.92ppkg / £651.73.

Bulls under 72 months (x2) averaged 98.83ppkg / £993.20.

Overall average of 119.30ppkg – MORE CATTLE WANTED TO MEET DEMAND.

PRIME HOGGETS (3412)

An entry of 3412 prime lambs sold to an average of 170.37ppkg.

Super Lights (13) to 136ppkg. Others to 120ppkg from RR & CE Hodnett, Wernygyfron. Average of  134.85ppkg.

Lights (184) to 172ppkg from TD Evans & Co, Maesmochnant and JE & SM Watkin & Son, Pentrego. Others to 167ppkg from RE Astley, Rhosgomorog. Average of 161.56ppkg.

Standards (809) to 235ppkg from I E Roberts & Son, Measdyfnant. Others to 225ppkg from J Corfield & Sons, Fairfield. Average of 169.99ppkg.

Mediums (1275) to 260ppkg & 246ppkg from S Smith, Pentre Farm Cottage. Others to 220ppkg from I E Roberts & Son, Maesdyfnant. Average of 171.47ppkg

Heavies (687) to 225ppkg from H G Ellis & Co, Tynywern . Others to 214ppkg from S Smith, Pentre Farm Cottage. Average of  164.14ppkg   

Over Weights (368) to 173ppkg from H G Ellis & Co, Tynywern. Others to 171ppkg from JES Corfield, Woodgate Farm.  Average of 151.84ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (1692)

A similar entry of culls this week seeing averages of £44.07 for ewes and £59.84 for rams. Ewes topped at £112 from R Richards & Co, Maenllengen. E A Marston, New House, presented ewes to £111. Rams topped at £116 from D L Jones, Ddol. PA Lloyd & TS Wierzbinski, Cartref, presented a ram making £101.

STORE LAMBS (401)

A seasonal entry of store lambs this week topping at £65.50 for mule wether lambs from GO Jones & JA Lewis, Wern Farm. Theave lambs topped at £64.50 for Beltex x lambs from H W Venables, Penygelly Farm.

Averages for the day were as follows:

Theave Lambs (99) averaged £46.40 topping at £64.50.

Mixed and clean lambs (144) averaged £43.80 topping at £60.50.

Wether lambs (13) averaged £54.54 topping at £65.50.

Tup lambs (121) averaged £39.08 topping at £61.

Cade Lambs -  and entry of 24 cade lambs this week topping at £27 from GTW Andrew, Bwlch. Average of the day was £14.

IN-LAMB EWES & COUPLES

An entry of 164 in lamb ewes were again met with sterner trade as purchasers become more cautious towards the ewes they buy. The sale included an ongoing dispersal from E R Morris, Fronlas Fawr, who presented 87 Texel x Welsh ewes in flock ages from 2 year olds to full mouth which sold to a high of £63 per head.

Another special entry, a reduction sale from EG & SA Watkin, Pantyfalog, sold a run of 55 as found mules, all carrying twins in lamb to a Texel ram sold to a top of £75 per head.

Further entries from A & E G Jones, Blaencwm, offered 22 3 year old welsh half bred ewes scanned at 227% to a Texel or Texel x Suffolk Rams which sold to £86.

Couples

An increased entry of 85 ewes with their lambs brought with it a higher quality of sheep entered, that saw prices peak at £172 for a full mouth Suffolk ewe with twin texel lambs from RG & JL Peate, Cwmderw. Messrs Peate sold further twins to £171 & £170 respectively and singles to £130.

TE & D Jones, Penlan, sold a 3 year old Suffolk x ewe with a single Beltex x lamb for £150 and a pen of 3 3 and 4 year old Dorset x ewes with Beltex single lambs for £148.

An ongoing dispersal from WA & EM Morris, Maestanyglwyden, saw an entry of 18 Texel x ewes with Texel lambs sell to £170 for twins and £133 singles the Whole run averaged £55 / life.

Averages: Singles averaged £125 to £150.

Twins averaged £151 to £172.

Next catalogued sale of couples 6th March 2017, expecting in excess of 50 units for next week’s sales.

COWS & CALVES

An entry of 11 cows and calves and one in-calf cow which topped the sale at £2500 for a pedigree Limousin 2010 born cow “Ellesmere Findy” in-calf to “Ellesmere Hugo” due early April from AHM Lea & Sons, Lee Bridges. AT £2050 was a Hereford x cow with her Limousin x bull calf from RG & JL Peate, Cwmderw. Next at £1670 was a Beef shorthorn cow with her Limousin bull calf, P’d back in calf to a Limousin bull from W D Jones & Son, Upper Scafell.

A breakdown of all prices achieved were as follows: £2000 + 2 lots, £1600 - £1800 2 lots, £1400 - £1600 7 lots, £1200 - £1400 1 lot.
