Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a sale at Buttington Cross, Welshpool on Monday.

OTMS (23)

Otm cows topped ay £1339.21 (157ppkg) for a 853kg Charolais cow from Roberts & Jones, Parc, Llangadfan. J & B Vaughan, Sychtyn, presented a 681kg Limousin otm cow making £953.40 (140ppkg).

Heifers under 48 months topped at £980.42 (149ppkg) for a 658kg Fresian heifer from D C Benbow, Pump House. E Watkin, Tybrith, presented a 602kg Limousin heifer making £939.12(156ppkg). Steers under 48 months topped at £1068.48 (144ppkg) for a Blonde weighing 742kg making £1068.48(144ppkg). J Pryce, The smithy, presented a 524kg Limousin steer making £759.80(145ppkg).

Otm Cows (x13) averaged 122.85ppkg / £794.54.

Cows 48 to 72 months (x3) averaged 134.26ppkg / £799.72.

Heifers under 48 months (x4) averaged 142.55ppkg / £923.01.

Steers under 48 months (x3) averaged 144.26ppkg / £959.35.

Overall average of 130.57ppkg – MORE CATTLE WANTED TO MEET DEMAND.

PRIME HOGGETS (3915)

An entry of 3915 prime lambs sold to an average of 182.65ppkg.

Lights (78) to 184ppkg from S J Smith, Penybryn. Others to 178ppkg from J G Owen, Abercannon. Average of 173.27ppkg.

Standards (293) to 205ppkg from GO Jones & JA Lewis, Wern Farm. Others to 203ppkg from C & M Higgs, Little Bank. Average of 181.25ppkg.

Mediums (1228) to  255ppkg from DWP Griffiths, Park Lodge. Others to 250ppkg from HM Powell & Son, White House. Average of 183.33ppkg

Heavies (1474) to 235ppkg from J A Wood & Sons, Kinnerton Farm. Others to 221ppkg from JR, RM, JP Andrew, Bronheulog. Average of  171.89ppkg   

Over Weights (762) to 162ppkg from J A Wood & Sons, Kinnerton Farm. Others to 160ppkg from Price & Price, Cwmearl.  Average of 149.21ppkg.

PRIME LAMBS (49)

An entry of 49 Prime Lambs sold to an average of 266.39ppkg.

Standards (24) to 281ppkg & 278ppkg from G, JL & RW Pritchard, Penysarn. Others to 271ppkg from J & J Beavan & Sons, Winsbury. Average of 272.45ppkg.

Mediums (16) to 282ppkg from J & J Beavan & Sons, Winsbury. Others to 268ppkg from J & J Beavan & Sons, Winsbury. Average of 258.58ppkg.

Heavies (9) to 248ppkg  & 228ppkg from D Evans & Co, Manor Farm. Others to 224ppkg from M B Morgan, Esgair. Average of 235.02ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (2259)

A large show of culls this week, with improved averages being £58 for ewes and £69 for rams. Topping the ewe section at £115 for a pen of 2 ewes was WJC Pryce, Prenafal. Also at £115 was a pen of 8 ewes form Red House Farm, Aberhafesp. Rams topped at £127.50 for 2 rams from M H Pugh, Gilfach. ME & MB Roberts, Woodleasowes, presented a ram making £119.

STORE LAMBS

Very small entry of 72 store lambs as we come to the end of the season, 60 tup lambs forward averaging £58 topping at £64. 6 ewe lambs averaged £51.42 averaging £62.50. and 6 mixed and clean lambs averaged £37.67 topping at £41.50.

Cade Lambs -  An entry of 137 cade lambs this week topping at £36 averaging £10.

COUPLES

The better weather brought with it an increased entry of 172 ewes with their lambs that sold to a blistering trade to old and new buyers which peaked at £212 for 2 Texel x full mouth ewes with twin lambs from E W Howells & Son, Oakwood. Further lots from the same home hit £200, £196, £182, £180 and £175 for the whole run to average £68/ life.

Mr Milton Jones’ last run from his reduction sale saw a Texel x 3 year old ewe with twin lambs hit £205 with others to £190 & £175.

Sarah Jones, Arbenig, sold a Suffolk  x as found ewe with twins for £192 and two Texel x yearlings with Beltex x lambs for £178 & £170 respectively.

The best of the twin traded between £160 -  £212, second quality between £140 - £160, older hill breeds  with twin between £100 - £140.

Best singles peaked at £122 for a Lleyn x 2 year old with a Texel x lamb at foot from Alison Evans, Penrhos Farm. Others hit £116 for a pen of 5 Texel x as found ewes from JBC Gwillim, Bwlch Garth.

Best singles traded between £100 - £122, majority of the others between £80 - £100.

Normal, Non Catalogued sale next week commencing at 11am.

COWS & CALVES

Another seasonal entry of 9 cows and calves met with a slightly easier trade than a fortnight ago with less people around the ring. Leading the way at £1950 was a Limousin cow with a Saler x heifer calf from WRB Jones, Brynawelon. From the same home was a Limousin 3rd calver with a Salers x heifer calf which made £1500. At £1680 was a Pedigree Limousin cow born 2011 with a Limousin heifer calf presented by M Pryce, Broomhill Farm. Also at £1680 was a 2012 born Limousin cow with a heifer calf from M P Adams, Foxholes farm. A breakdown of all prices achieved were as follows: £1800 - £2000 1 lot, £1600 - £1800 2 lots, £1400 - £1600 1 lot, £1100 - £1400 2 lots, £1000 - £1100 1 lot, < £1000 2 lots.
