Welshpool Livestock Sales held a busy day of trading at Buttington Cross on Monday.

OTMS (35)

A good show of Otm cattle this week topping at £1179.68 (146ppkg) for a Limousin weighing 808kg from RG, EM & PG Roberts, Tymawr. Probert & Probert, Lower Hill, presented a Limousin weighing 600kg making £948 (158ppkg). Cows 48/72 months topped at £1070.59 (151ppkg)  for a Limousin weighing 709kg from RG, EM & PG Roberts,Tymawr. DM Jones, Geseilfa Uchaf, presented a 629kg Limousin making £1000.11 (159ppkg)

Otm Cows (x23) averaged 127.62ppkg / £824.44.

Otm Bull (x1) averaged 115ppkg / £1138.50.

Cows 48 – 72 months (x10) averaged 135.89ppkg / £798.60.

Bulls under 72 months (x1) averaged 100ppkg / £815.

Overall average of 128.22ppkg – MORE CATTLE WANTED TO MEET DEMAND.

An entry of 860 prime hoggs sold to an average of  193.90ppkg.

Standards (165) to 214ppkg from C Roberts, The Cwms. Others to 205ppkg from WD & ME Parry, Caetwp. Average of 190.42ppkg.

Mediums (185) to  220ppkg from Evan Davies & Co, Red House. Others to 216ppkg from Evan Davies & Co, Red House. Average of 202.89ppkg

PRIME LAMBS (2926)

An entry of 2926 Prime Lambs sold to an average of 261.55ppkg.

Lights (325) to 289ppkg from DI Jones, Cwm. Others to 277ppkg from FG & G Mountofrd, Middle Heldre. Average of 266.03ppkg.

Standards (1246) to 328ppkg from DW & SM Roberts, The White House. Others to 316ppkg from TC Evans, Bryncyrch. Average of 258.06ppkg.

Mediums (1275) to 328ppkg from BE & BE Langford, Llettymeibion. Others to 316ppkg from TH Vaughan & Son, Maesmochnant Uchaf. Average of 263.74ppkg.

Heavies (51) to 269ppkg from D & S Jones, Brynglas. Others to 265ppkg from FW Humphreys & Sons, Brook House Farm. Average of 240.71ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (1954)

A good show of culls this week seeing averages of £60.73 for ewes and £73.23 for rams. Topping the cull ewe section was R Evans, Green Farm, with a single ewe making £120. J Morrison, Meadow Brook Cottage, sold a ewe making £108. R Evans, Oakwood, sold a ram making the top of £117. JW Davies & Sons, Tynybryniau, sold a ram to £110.

COUPLES

Another good entry of couples being 218 older ewes and 323 hoggs selling to a mixed trade. The 218 older ewes again a variety of lowland and upland ewes sold very well hitting a top price of £160 for a 3-year-old Texel x ewe with twin lambs from AP & JE Jenkins, Pontyperchyll. Others hit £150 for 11 suffolk x 2 and 3 year old ewes with 18 lambs from Messrs Evans, Llwynycrwth. SH Lloyd, Penllan, sold 2 Texel x Beltex 2 year old ewes with single lambs for £150. A 3 year old with a single lamb sold again to £150 and a yearling to £148.

The entry of hoggs sold to a much harder trade than we have witnessed over the last few weeks with the top price hitting £185 for a pen of 10 coloured mules from JV Davies & Co, Garth Fawr. F Bailey sold 6 Texel x hoggs to £180. EW Howells & Son, sold Texels to £172 and Suffolks to £170. The majority traded between £145 and £165.

Averages 541 older ewes averaged £133/ unit or £60/life.

323 hoggs averaged £150/ unit.

Next weeks catalogued sale of 850 couples including second prize sale of hoggs and lambs kindly sponsored by the British Wool Board – Sale to commence at 11am prompt.

COWS & CALVES

An excellent entry of 72 cows and calves met with a grand trade. Leading the way was an entry of 6 cows and calves from Christine Williams and the Wilodge herd. A British Blue x 1st calver with a Limousin bull calf at foot which sold at £3200. A Limousin x 1st calver with her steer calf made £3000.A 2012 born British Blue x 3rd calver sold for £2950, whilst 5th and 6th calvers with Limousin calves sold for £2380 and £2150.

DP & RE Evans, Moelygarth, sold a Limousin x 1st calver with a bull calf and a Hereford x 1st calver with a Limousin bull calf both for £2320 with 4 from David averaging £2150.

Presented by RE & CJ Davies, Boycott Hall, was a Limousin x 1st calver with a bull calf selling for £2500, a Limousin x 1st calver with a heifer calf at £2100 and a 2nd calver with a bull calf for £2280. From JH Roberts, Rolly Farm, Knockin, were some British Blue x 1st calvers with a Limousin calves which sold to a top of £2000, with a Limousin x 1st calver with a bull calf, from the same home making £2050.

A breakdown of all prices achieved were as follows: £2500 + 5 lots, £2200 - £2500 4 lots, £2000- £2200 8 lots, £1800- £2000 12 lots, £1600 - £1800 8 lots, £1400 - £1600 17 lots, £1200 - £1400 7 lots, £1000 - £1200 3 lots, <£1000 5 lots.
