Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a sale at Buttington Cross, Welshpool on Monday.

OTMS (21)

With Otm cattle selling to a flying trade over the past few weeks – this week was the same seeing a top of £1127.10 (170ppkg) for a Charolais otm cow weighing 663kg from TEP Jones & Son, Old House. And a 710kg Limousin otm from the same home made £1093.40 (154ppkg). E & H Chapman, Morfodion, sold a 690kg Otm cow to £986.70 (143ppkg).

Younger cows at 48 to 72 months topped at £1106.95 (169ppkg) for a 655kg Charolais from E & H Chapman, Morfodion. S H Lloyd & Son, Manor Farm, presented a 587kg Limousin making £986.16 (168ppkg).

Section round-up

Otm Cows (x13) averaged 136.77ppkg / £865.62.

Cows 48 – 72 months (x8) averaged 145.23ppkg / £850.50.

Overall average of 139.84ppkg

PRIME LAMBS (6688)

An entry of 6688 prime lambs with an average of 199.43ppkg.

Lights (624) to 217ppkg from T Mogg, The Woodlands. Others to 210ppkg from JG Ellis & Son, Tynewydd. Average of 185.52ppkg.

Standards (1342) to 247pkg from BE & BE Langford, Llettymeibion. Others to 231ppkg from Red House Farm, Aberhafesp. Average of 200.93ppkg.

Mediums (2853) to 271ppkg from J Meredith, Lodge Farm. Others to 251ppkg from RA Davies, Llawnt Isaf. Average of 200.91ppkg.

Heavies (1585) to 249ppkg from RA Davies, Llawnt Isaf. Others to 249ppkg from R A Davies, Llawnt Isaf. Average of 194.95ppkg.

Over Weights (216) to 197ppkg from B Powell, Gilfach Y Rhiw. Others to 193ppkg from D P Casewell, Tanrhiw. Average of 179..58ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (2475)

A slightly reduced entry of 2475 cull ewes was met with a strong trade averaging £50. This was £6 up on the previous week. Stronger continentals were in demand , peaking at £140 from I Jenkins, Bryneglur. DTA Williams, Upper Bolbro, presented some excellent ewes making £120. SB Owen & Co, Garreg, Dolfor, had an excellent trade achieving £107.50 for well finished ewes. A small entry of rams achieved an average of £70. STORE LAMBS (737)

Similar entry of store lambs forward this week seeing at top of £69 for Texel Mixed and clean lambs from R W Roberts, Hillfield. Tup lambs also topped at £69 for Suffolk x lambs from P & R Owen, Tirbrwnt.

Theave lambs topped at £53.50 for texel x lambs from F A Benson, 123 Lon Glanyrafon.

Averaged of the day were:

Theave lambs £46.01, Mixed/Clean lambs £52.91, Wether lambs £46 and Tup lambs £51.67.

BREEDING EWES

The early prize show and sale of breeding ewes kindly sponsored by For Farmers brought a sale day entry of 1800 breeding ewes. There was plenty of quality on offer which gave sale day judge Mr Ryan Morris, Maestanyglwyden, a hard task. Results for the day were as follows:

1st – 10 Texel x Mule yearlings from JL Morgan, Tynllwyn, sold for £172.

2nd – 20 Texel x Mule Yearlings from ER Jones, Dolagored, sold for £163.

3rd – 12 Beltex x Texel yearlings from TW Price & Morgan, Ty Rosser, sold for £150.

Quality on offer was againg keenly contested with poorer ewes proving harder work. Top price of the day going to J M Lewis, Pentwyn, for 2 Beltex x Charolais yearlings selling for £25o. 2 ¾ Beltex from the same owner made £240 and 8 Beltex x Texel yearlings averaged £207.50.

J L Morgan, Ty Llwyn, sold 40 Texel x Mule yearlings that averaged £161 / head.

R M Evans, New House, sold 16 Texel x yearlings for £162 and a further 16 for £149.

Bryan Jones, Fraithwen, sold a run of 40 Texel x yearlings that averaged £142 and 30 Mules that averaged £152.

2 year old ewes peaked at £128 from P R Evans, Fachwen, for 4 Blocky Texels.

A Run of 120 strong Texel ewes in flock ages from 2 to 4 year olds from EA Davies & Co, Ysgubor Newydd, sold to £128 and averaged £110.

A small entry of mule ewe lambs form AM Jones, Middle Farm, peaked at £84 and averaged £83.

Averages of the day were:

1130 yearling to £250 averaged £132.

57 2 year olds to £128 averaged £76.

258 3 year olds to£128 averaged £94.

222 full mouth ewes to £112 averaged £74.

62 as found ewes to £100 averaged £72.
