Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a busy Monday at Buttington Cross, Welshpool.

OTMS (41)

Good show of otm cattle again this week – although more could have been sold.

Topping the otm section at £1302 (155ppkg) was a 840kg Limousin from BM Evans, Coedygarth. DM JErman & Co, Lower Glynbrochan, sold a 775kg Limousin making £1224.50 (158ppkg). Top ppkg in the otms went to E Jones & Son, Penbontpren, with a 668kg Limousin making 159ppkg (£1062.12).

Younger cows topped at £1080.40 (148ppkg ) from WRL Price & Co, Pencwm, for a Limousin weighing 730kg. Heifers under 48 monthes topped at £1195.56 (162ppkg ) for a 738kg Charolais from JM & C Williams, Upper Pentre, also from the same home was another Charolais heifer weighing 673kg making £1096.99 (163ppkg).

Section round-up

Otm Cows (x26) averaged 130.02ppkg / £878.26.

Cows 48 – 72 months (x2) averaged 134.55ppkg / £945.20.

Heifers Under 48 months (x8) averaged 145.14ppkg / £931.08.

Otm Bull (x2) averaged 118.93ppkg / £1023.37.

Bulls under 72 months (x2) averaged 135.02ppkg / £909.38.

Steers 48-72 months (x1) averaged 137ppkg making £942.56.

Overall average of 132.77ppkg.

PRIME LAMBS (3714)

A silimar entry of 3714 prime lambs with an average of 164.79ppkg.

Lights (473) to 174ppkg from TH & G Davies & Son, Celyn Mawr. Others to 172ppkg from C Roberts, The Cwms. Average of 144.56ppkg.

Standards (1191) to 213pkg & 203ppkgfrom Ellis Lloyd, Garthiaen. Others to 181ppkg from MM & R Morris, Maestanyglwyden. Average of  159.19ppkg.

Mediums (1254) to 263ppkg  from Ellis Lloyd & Co, Garthiaen. Others to 225ppkg from RA Davies, Lawnt Isaf. Average of  172.80ppkg.

Heavies (622) to 239ppkg from P Tippetts, Lodge Hill Farm. Others to 214ppkg from R A Davies, Lawnt Isaf. Average of 171.18ppkg.

Over Weights (112) to 233ppkg from P Tippetts, Lodge Hill Farm. Others to 230ppkg from CE Pryce, Yr Helyg. Average of 153.78ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (2716)

An entry of 2716 cull saw an average of £40 for ewes which topped at £95 from P Tippetts, Lodge Hill Farm.  G Pugh & Son, The Garth, presented a pen of 17 ewes making £93. Cull rams averaged £47 topping at £135 from G A Radmore, Timberth. Well flesh ewes with better conformation were indemand whilst poorer mules and welsh were not as sought after.

STORE LAMBS (1181)

A strong entry of 1181  store lambs this week selling to an  average of £47.94 and a slightly sharper trade. The top prices went to G O Jones and J A Lewis, Wern Farm, Pool Quay with £76.00 for Beltex   theave lambs and  £67.50 from  H M Rogers Upper House, Abermule with Texel x tup lambs. C M Phillips & co, Broniarth, Pool Road presented  mixed/clean lambs topping £62.00.  Wether lambs topped £57.00 from  J G Ellis & son, Ty Newydd,  Llangynog.

Averages for the day were:

Theave Lambs (238): £46.23

Mixed/clean lambs (264): £47.95

Tup lambs (638): £49.62

BREEDING EWES

An impressive non catalogued sale of 1700 breeding ewes was again met with a selective trade as purchasers looked for bargain replacements. The decline in the fat trade has certainly had a impact over the last few weeks, although the best quality ewe still keenly sough after with prices hitting £148 for 23 improves welsh yearling ewes from GEG & DB Davies, Brynfedwen, who sold a further 23 for £138.

GE Davies & Sons, Cwmbromley, sold 11 Texel x Yearlings for £140, 6 Beltex x 2 year olds for £108 and 10 Welsh halfbred full mouth ewes for £67.

Yearling mules from MA Andrew & Son, Tycerrig, hit £120 twice. Welsh 2 year olds peaked at £92 form Williams, Rhospenbwa, and full mouth ewes from RG Pierce, Old Fields, hit £94.

An entry of 137 ewe lambs peaked at £98 for strong Texels from EH Bennett, Trellwyddion, who sold further pens from to £98, £90 and £88. DH & JC Parry, Tynymaes, sold Texel x ewe lambs to £90 and £85.

Catalogued sale of 3700 breeding ewes next Monday 9th October – sale to commence at 11.30am prompt.

BREEDING RAMS

Today saw an entry of 311 rams in a catalogued sale through ring 2, they topped at 650gns for a Texel Yearling from GE Lloyd & Sons, Middle Cwmheyope, another from the same home made 620gns for another Texel Yearling. The 17 rams on offer from Messrs Lloyd averaged 387.65gns or £407.

GE Davies & Son, Cwmbromley, presented an entry of 6 Beltex yearling rams and 2 Texel yearling rams averaged 462.50gns or £485.63. Aged rams topped at 480gns for a Texel from J Newing, Wtra.

Ram Lambs hit 280gns from B Lawrence & C Morgan, Maes Eglwys, for a Texel. WRB Jones, Brynawelon, also presented a Texel ram lamb making 280gns.

COWS & CALVES

Cows and calves were harder work with less buyers around the ring resulting in a reduced trade which saw a top of £1520 for a Blonde x 1st calver with a Limousin heifer calf from MR Williams, Wern Holding.  Next at £1480 was a Limousin x 1st calver with a Limousin heifer calf from IP Jones, Ddol Fawr, another similar outfit from the same home make £1420.
