Welshpool Livestock Sales report on the sale held at Buttington Cross, Welshpool on Monday

OTMS (26)

With the majority of the cows being tb tested a good trade was seen once again with otm cows topping at £1416.47 (163ppkg) for a 869kg Charolais from Roberts & Jones, Parc.  Younger cows topped at £1435.90 (166ppkg) again from Roberts & Jones for a 865kg Charolais cow. Heifers under 48 months reached £1005 (150ppkg) for a Salers weighing 670kg from CF Jones, Lower Cefnpenarth.

Bulls under 72 months topped at £1585.70 (157ppkg ) for a 1010kg Limousin from G & A Orrells, Maesderwen. Another younger bull from IW & OM Jones, Tymawr, reached £1185.70 (167ppkg) for a 710kg Limousin.

Averages of the day were as follows:

OTM Cows (x18) 129.38ppkg / £836.80.

Cows 48-72 months (x5) 146.63ppkg / £1058.70.

Heifers Under 48 months (x1) 150ppkg / £1005.

Bulls Under 72 months (x2) 161.13ppkg / £1385.70.

Overall Average 136.79ppkg.

PRIME HOGGETS (3549)

An entry of 3549 prime hogget’s sold to a similar overall average once again  of 209.05ppkg.

Lights (290) to 225ppkg from GL & SE Lloyd, Bryn Hyfryd. Others to 211ppkg from W G Jones, Cwmduggan. Average of 173.98ppkg.

Standards (748) to 258ppkg & 247ppkg from G Davies, Lan Farm. Others to 221ppkg from JE & DW Rogers, Red House . Average of 201.63ppkg.

Mediums (1175) to 243ppkg from M & H Owens, Glantre. Others to 237ppkg from A I Watkins, Maesywennol. Average of 218.98ppkg

Heavies (850) to 242ppkg  from Lythwood SHeep . Others to 232ppkg from G Davies, Lan Farm. Average of 214.98ppkg   

Over Weights (254) to 210ppkg from MPB Ashton & Son, Belan Ddu. Others to 209ppkg from R Richards & Co, Maenllengen.  Average of 196.89ppkg.

CULL SHEEP (1908)

A slightly smaller entry of cull this week saw averages of £47.68 for ewes topping at £132 for a pen from Tynybryn Farms.  M J Williams, Pontyperson, sold ewes to £128. An entry of 104 cull rams averaged £75.63 topping at £127 from P R Evans & Son, fachwen.

Good quality ewes were in strong demand, whereas middle of the road ewes were less sought after.

STORE LAMBS

A reduced entry pf 248 store lambs again sold to a buoyant trade with the short term lambs keenly contested. Theave lambs sold to £68.50 for 6 texel x from J H Jones & Co, Penycefn, with others to £68, £65.50 and £63.50. mixed and clean lambs hit £76 for 6 mules from J E Roberts Watkins, Creigfryn, with others to £73.50, £66 and £59.50.

Wether lambs sold to £58 for welsh lambs with others to £57 and £54.50. Tup lambs peaked at £79 for suffolks with others to £74.50, £65.50 and £59.

Mixed/Clean Lambs: £44.82,

Theave Lambs: £54.97,

Tup lambs: £50.16,

Wether Lambs: £44.00,

Sale of store lambs to commence at 10.30 am prompt next week.

CADE LAMBS

A small entry of cade lambs selling to £29 with others to £28 x3, £24 and £23 x2. Average £19.95.

COUPLES

An entry of 42 couples again sold to a very good trade that peaked at £175 twice, first for a Texel x full mouth ewe with twin beltex lambs from MM & R Morris, Maestanyglwyden. And secondly from RH & GJ Richards, Rhosfawr, for 3 Texel x full mouth with twin Suffolk lambs. Other entries from MM & R Morris hit £172 and £170 for twins, with singles to £120 and £115 x2. Oher entries from Messrs Richards hot £172, £170 and £168.

Catalogued sale next Monday (5th March) for in-lamb ewes and couples – sale to commence at 11.30am.
