PRIME HOGGETS (3976)

A larger entry of hoggets forward sold to return an average of 188.71ppkg, with a top price of 228ppkg for a pen of 5 lambs weighing 38kg hogget’s making £86.50 from M & H Owens, Glantre, and £97/head for 63kg hoggets from TE & MA Jerman, Penyffridd.

A larger number of hoggets forward sold to as expected a slower trade throughout, especially for the heavier weight hoggets of which there were more on offer, as a few feeding hoggets come onto the market. Highlights of the day was the trade for the best quality hoggets which again sold to strong competitive bidding throughout. Lighter weight hoggets also found more competitive bidding especially the more meated types. Medium weight export and supermarket hoggs (42-48kg) also proved more difficult to sell. Hopefully as numbers of hoggs in the country fall, trade will increase for all types.
