A successful carpet retail business that has been trading in Welshpool for 45 years has gone on the market for £40,000.

Powys Carpets on Berriew Street (pictured) was first established in the town by the late Ian Jones in 1969 when he began selling carpets from a converted bread delivery van. He and his wife, Doreen, then opened a shop in Broad Street, which the business quickly outgrew and they moved to the current premises in 1970.

The business is now run by Doreen, who employs two fitters. She has decided to sell up and devote her time to setting up a holiday let business with her daughter, Michelle and granddaughter, Lauren.

“Powys Carpets has a very good name in the area and I am proud to say that we have a lot of repeat business from generations of the same families,” said Doreen, 71. “Over the years, we have had customers in many parts of the country, including London and the Midlands and I think the business has great potential for growth with more sales staff.

“I am going to miss the business but the time is right to sell and I am looking forward to helping my daughter to establish a holiday let business because the area is very much tourism orientated.”

Her son, Robert, who is a director of the business, has recently taken over a Dolgellau bakery business with his partner.

A new lease for the premises at 17, Berriew Street, Welshpool will be granted to the purchasers of the business for a term to be negotiated. The current rent is £6,500 a year.

The three storey property offers 334 square metres of space with a ground floor retail area, external storage, a first floor showroom and second floor storage.

The leasehold business sale is being handled by James Evans, Halls’ commercial manager based in Shrewsbury.
