Welshpool going back in time

For the third consecutive year, Welshpool will take a trip back in time this weekend when the town celebrates its 1940s weekend with a whole host of activities in and around the centre.

Organisers are promising something for the whole family and said this edition will build on the success of the event last year, when visitors from as far afield as the USA visited.

Volunteers are still required and you should contact Alan Crowe on 07782 166342 if you can spare an hour or two.

There’s plenty happening so we have teamed up with the organisers to share the full calendar:

TOWN HALL (upstairs)

Various stalls and talks on both days, plus entertainment with Castle Belles Choir on Sunday.

CORN EXCHANGE (Town Hall)

Spirit of the Homefront will have a variety of displays including American Red Cross, Bevin Boy, Anderson Shelter, Timber Corps amongst others. Homemade cakes plus tea & coffee will be served.

WELSHPOOL & LLANFAIR LIGHT RAILWAY

Encampment displays and entertainers at both Raven Square and Llanfair Stations. Shooting gallery plus vintage and military traders at Raven Square. A vintage Crosville bus will link the town centre with the station picking up at the Tourist Information Centre and opposite the Town Hall.

CHURCH HOUSE

Tea dance Saturday afternoon 2-5pm, and big screen showing of the Hollywood classic Casablanca on Sunday afternoon from 2pm.

PUB ENTERTAINMENT

Pheasant Inn hosts Harmony Belle Saturday afternoon 2-4pm; Ricky Hunter at Baytree Tearooms Saturday night; Sparky & Sprite at the Westwood on Saturday night.

COWSHACC

Big Band Evening with Porthywaen Band on Saturday night at 7.30pm. Tickets from Tourist Information Centre, or Cowshacc.

HALL STREET

Live entertainment on Saturday with Powys Gwent ACF Band, Kitten Von Mew and Johnny Victory. Sunday from 10.30am with Moonlight Serenade, Ricky Hunter, Bluebird Belles, and George Formby Experience.

SPITFIRE

This iconic aircraft will be on display Sunday only in Seven Stars carpark at the rear of the Town Hall, from 9am along with vintage vehicles.

CUMBERLAND PLACE

A Land Army display on Saturday only with John Hughes, the Singing Farmer, between 11am and midday.

PARADES

Led by Powys Gwent ACF Band will leave Café Inglenook at 12 noon on Saturday and proceed along Church Street, Broad Street, High Street, down Jehu Road, along Brook Street to Café Inglenook. A short procession to the Cenotaph will take place on Sunday for a short service at 3pm.

AIR RAIDS

Intelligence has indicated that air raids are imminent and are expected each day at 1.30pm for which the public are warned that the siren will be sounded.

KING’S SPEECH

The King is expected to address the nation from the balcony of the Town Hall at 12.50pm on Saturday, and Prime Minister Winston Churchill on Sunday.

BLITZ BALL

Featuring the Ashby Little Big Band, this will be held in the Town Hall on Saturday Evening from 7.30pm, doors open 7pm. Due to rationing, patrons are asked to bring their own supper.

VARIETY SHOW

Featuring Andy Eastwood, Maggie O Hara and Pete Lindup, the Spirit of the Blitz Variety Show will take place in the Town Hall on Friday afternoon at 2pm. Doors open at 1.30pm.

EARLY BIRD PARTY NIGHT

To be held on Friday night in the Town Hall featuring Ricky Hunter and Amanda Beaumont from 7.30pm.

SHOP WINDOWS

A number of businesses have decorated their windows in either a 1940s or red white and blue theme.

MILITARY WIVES CHOIR CONCERT

This will take place on Sunday evening at the Methodist Church at 7.30pm. Doors open at 7pm. Also appearing will be Tammy Jones plus the Porthywaen Band.

PUZZLE SQUARE

The Monkey Puzzle café will once again become Café Renee for the weekend and on Sunday between 11.30-2.30pm there will be a French Accordian player to entertain shoppers and customers.
