Planners to consider £11million Neuadd Maldwyn proposal
The application from ClwydAlyn Housing Association, working in partnership with Powys County Council, is for 66 one and two-bedroomed units, contained within the former council building on Severn Road and within a new building at the rear of the site.
The application will be considered by councillors at Friday’s meeting of the Planning, Taxi Licensing and Rights of Way Committee.
The council said that ExtraCare schemes provide an independent living option where older people can live in their own self-contained home - with their own 'front door' - while accessing a wide range of communal facilities and access to personal care support packages.
Technology Enabled Care - for example 'tele-conferencing' with health partners - will also form a major part of care and support for residents, if the plans are given the go-ahead.
Councillor Myfanwy Alexander is Cabinet Member with responsibility for Adult Social Care at the council. She commented: “This application represents a great opportunity to provide suitable accommodation for older local people, allowing them to live with dignity and security.”
The project has been given financial support by the Welsh Government and would bring a number of new jobs to the town.
Dylan Owen, Head of Commissioning for the county council explained: “A review of older people’s accommodation in Powys identified Welshpool as a priority area for the development of ExtraCare. Our gap analysis found that the town has significant demand for such a service with little or no facilities to meet the need.”
