Welshpool vaccinations to start next Monday

18/01/2021 @ 09:23

Welshpool will join the international Covid Immunisation Programme by starting to deliver the vaccine from next Monday.

While the operation by Powys Teaching Health Board to deliver the vaccine to the over 80 age groups in Newtown continues this week, Welshpool Medical Centre has been given the green light to contact the next priority group - the 75-79 age cohort, with appointments to be offered from Monday, January 25.

“The practice team are working around the clock to make contact with everyone, so please do not contact us asking for your appointment time, we will contact you by telephone,” said a spokesperson on behalf of Drs Russell, Kiel, Aslam, Vibhishanan, Kelly, Kingham and Hirons.

“We are aware that the phone lines are busy, with the call handling team doing their best to manage the influx of calls. Please do not ring Welshpool or Guilsfield surgeries.

“Our Welshpool-based Covid clinics will be in operation from Monday, January 25, by a pre-booked appointment. This is not a walk-in clinic. If you do not have a pre-booked appointment and just turn up, you will be turned away.

“We will not be providing Covid clinics from the branch surgery at Guilsfield, due to the logistics and complexities surrounding the Covid vaccine.”

The practice will be continuing with all other general medical services alongside the Covid clinics. Their hours of opening, phone lines and dispensing facilities will remain the same from 8am-6pm, Monday to Friday.

Each appointment will only take 10 minutes but we must keep the following in mind:

Patients driving to the practice

  • Please bring ID with you.
  • We have been able to only allocate four designated Covid car parking spaces. This is because our car parking space remains limited.
  • Please arrive at the practice only five minutes before your appointment time. You will not be seen any sooner by arriving 30 minutes earlier. Please try not to be late where possible.
  • Please park in the designated Covid car parking spaces so we know where to find you. These will be located to the back entrance of the practice.
  • Please do not leave your car, but ring into the surgery off your mobile phone onto a dedicated covid telephone line of 01938 557356. Do not ring the main practice number.
  • If you do not have a mobile phone, remain in your car and they will come to you. Do not leave your car as they are trying to reduce footfall into the Practice building.
  • The Doctor or Nurse will come and collect you, take your temperature and take you into the specifically designed Covid vaccination room.
  • Please wear a mask, use the hand scrub on entering and do not touch any surfaces.
  • Please wear clothing that will allow for quick and easy access to the upper part of your arm.
  • The Doctor or Nurse will ask you a series of questions prior to you having your vaccination.
  • This appointment time is solely for your Covid vaccination. We will not be able to deal with anything else.
  • The administrator in the room with the Doctor or Nurse will provide you with a Covid credit card showing details of the vaccination you have just received also the date of your next Covid vaccination. Keep this card safe.
  • On arriving back at your car please, do not drive for a further 10 minutes.
  • Even though you have had your first Covid vaccination you are still required to adhere to the Covid guidance of mask wearing, washing hands and remaining socially distanced from others.
