New company “interested” in skatepark construction

A major project to create a new skatepark for Welshpool looks like being a step nearer after the Town Council confirmed that it was in negotiations with a company.

The closure of the park in Covid due to health and safety has been a contentious issue, leaving the town’s youngsters with little to do.

And recently we revealed that the Town Council was having problems identifying a company willing to take it on due to a backlog of jobs caused by the Covid inactivity.

But last night, Town Clerk Anne Wilson told us that it was in hand and progressing.

“The skateboard park is still ongoing,” she said.

“The company we hope to meet soon is about to give us a diary date to come to Welshpool. It is a company that I have worked with before, by pure coincidence and they are very flexible in their ideas. We have local people involved already and any designs would go out to full consultation.”

The local authority has earmarked the Maesydre car park on the site of the former tennis courts as an ideal location to build the park, hoping it will rival the fantastic facility in Newtown.

However, cost could be a major stumbling block yet with figures of over £100,000 previously touted.
