Hedgehog SOS as Rescue braces for influx

A Welshpool hedgehog rescue charity that featured on MyWelshpoolTV last year says it is in desperate need of funds as it prepares for the annual influx of patients.

Hokey Pokey Hedgehog Rescue was launched in the heart of Welshpool last year by mother and daughter Heather and Shelly Chave, and has successfully saved the lives of dozens of hogs since.

But with our prickly neighbours set to come out of hibernation soon, Heather said that the charity is in desperate need of financial support to create more space and facilities to expand their operation.

“In two months’ time we will be getting hogs in at a considerable rate,” said Heather.

“When you think how many we had in last summer when we started with just 50 Facebook followers and three vets aware of us, and yet now we have well over 500 followers and eight vets calling me.”

As well as the immediate Welshpool area, Heather said she has received hogs from Llanfair Caereinion, Lake Vyrnwy, Llanymynech, Llanfyllin, Llanfechain, Llansantffraid, Oswestry, Wrexham, Ellesmere, Four Crosses, Shrewsbury, Middletown, Trewern and “anywhere in between".

“It’s a huge catchment area and, so far, I try to collect hogs myself,” she explained. “I need more room and more of everything and I need help.”

Heather has made a plea for fundraising ideas and is open to anything from coffee mornings, auction, race night, car boots or even a Monday £1 lottery to raise funds.

“I know it’s a big ask but if you can help in any way you will be helping me save a very special little creature that needs our help more than ever before.”
