Welshpool High School Year 12 student Brooke Selly has been awarded a prestigious Arkwright Scholarship.

The engineering scholarship is the most esteemed of its type in the UK, designed to inspire students to pursue their dreams and change the world as a future leader in engineering.

They are awarded to hard-working 16-year-old students through a rigorous selection process, supporting them through their A levels, or equivalent qualifications.

Each scholarship is sponsored by a commercial company, trade association, university, professional institution, armed service, government organisation, worshipful company, charitable trust or personal donor.

It means that support is offered in various ways, for example, valuable hands-on work experience, support for their curriculum project and a personal mentor who can help them with aspects of their studies and career planning.

Brooke is being sponsored by The South Wales Institute of Engineers Educational Trust (SWIEET), who encourage and support school age students to gain engineering understanding and appreciation, and encourages students towards rewarding careers in engineering and the built environment

Brooke will also receive £600 personal financial award over the years of study, personal development, Industry-based Connect Days, University-based VIP Receptions, early notification of national competitions and a network with like-minded students.

She hopes to continue her studies, concentrating on software or mechanical engineering at university and move into the field of software engineering.

“Congratulations Brooke on all your hard work,” the school’s Design and Technology Department said in a statement.
