Welshpool is set to be transported back in time when it hosts the return of its 1940s Weekend, with events and activities taking place from Friday through to Sunday.
Organisers are promising something for everyone following its enforced three-year absence due to the pandemic, with a children’s vintage fairground, craft and vintage stalls and tanks, aeroplanes and jeeps all part of a three-day festival.
The weekend will commence with a 40s Variety Show in the Corn Exchange at 2pm on Friday, followed by an evening of Fish’n’Chips & Knees Up Mother Brown at 7.30pm in the Church House.
A wartime fashion display can be seen at the Powysland Museum on both Friday and Saturday.
A 40s-themed dog show will be in Puzzle Square at midday day on Saturday, while a C.S. Lewis & Narnia display feature be in New Street Chapel, also on Saturday.
On the same day, a Tea Dance in the Church House takes place from 2pm and there will also be a showing of the film Carve Her Name with Pride on Saturday at 2pm in the Methodist Church.
Porthywaen Silver Band will be performing upstairs in the Town Hall on Saturday at 12.30pm.
On Saturday night, a Blitz Ball with the Ashby Little Big Band will take place in the Town Hall, and the weekend will close with a concert by Of One Accord mixed choir in the Methodist Church on Sunday evening.
Local businesses have been encouraged to dress up and decorate their windows accordingly.
Three aeroplanes - a Spitfire, a flying flea and a WW1 biplane used for pilot training in WW2 – will be on display in the town along with a Valentine tank, a Renault FT tank and a Merlin engine on a trailer which will be fired up several times.
The main street will be closed to traffic on both Saturday and Sunday from 8am till 6pm, and the short stay Seven Stars carpark behind the Town Hall will be closed from 6pm Friday evening until 6pm Sunday evening.
