Struggling families can save on water bills

The Welshpool area’s water provider has said that scores of parents and carers are missing out on help with their water bills.

Hafren Dyfrdwy said that up to 23% of local children receive free school meals – and are trying to contact those families to help them save £100s on their water bills as eligibility for free school meals is the same as support schemes available with the water company.

During the past four years, Hafren Dyfrdwy has introduced a number of different schemes, some of which can reduce a customer’s bill by as much as 90% - that’s roughly £200 a year!

In this year alone, Hafren Dyfrdwy has helped hundreds of people through programmes such as Here2Help, the Bill Cap scheme and Water Direct.

James Jesic, Managing Director at Hafren Dyfrdwy, said, “With nearly a quarter of the children across our region claiming free school meals, we know there’s more we can do to help families ease the financial worry that comes with running a household.

“With cost-of-living pressures facing so many, we want our customers to know we’re here to help.

“Hafren Dyfrdwy customers continue to enjoy the lowest average combined water and waste services bills in Wales, however, for some this is still too much. We want to help as many people as possible through one of our affordability schemes. All we need people to do is call us.

“We know that many families who receive free school meals are eligible for discounts – as are a number of people who are in receipt of other benefits.”

The water company, which serves Wrexham and Powys, introduced the money saving schemes to help people who may face difficulty paying their water bill, or have high water usage, or receive a lower-than-average income.
